Phone Scam

The Cobourg Police are investigating a report of an elderly couple being scammed out of $1500 after receiving a phone call from a supposed relative requiring assistance.

Though the “Emergency Scam” (or sometimes referred to as the “Grandparent Scam”) has been around for years, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and Police warns the public to be on alert after noting a marked increase in the number of complaints in the last two months.

Police would like to warn the public about the “Emergency Scam”.  If a member of the public receives a telephone call similar to this, it is important to contact the Police for assistance or make reference to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Website.
