On January 5, 2016, at about 11:50 AM, officers from the Cobourg Police Service attended at the VIA rail station in regards to a male who was making threats on the westbound train bound for Toronto.

Officers were advised by VIA rail officials, as well as witnesses aboard the train, that a male was overheard speaking on his cell phone and uttering threats to parties who were not aboard the train.

As a result of the initial investigation, this male was identified, arrested and then removed from the train.  At no time were threats made against individuals who were aboard the train, or the train equipment itself.

As a precaution to ensure public safety, all passengers and their luggage were removed from the rail car in question and it was then searched. Once this was completed, passengers and crew were allowed to return aboard the train, and they continued on to Toronto.

Charged with uttering threats to kill is James Martin Platts, 57 years of age, from Chatham-Kent.

He is currently being held in custody and will appear in Bail court on Wednesday Jan. 6, 2015.
