Here are some common sense rules that motorists should follow to maximize safety in the car:

1. Plan the route you will take and let someone know where you are going and your expected time of arrival.
2. Have your car keys ready prior to approaching the vehicle.
3. Always view the interior of your car before entering.
4. Lock your doors when in a vehicle to stop an offender from getting into the vehicle at traffic stops.
5. Be cautious of any stranger approaching the vehicle. If you feel danger, press the horn repeatedly in short blasts to attract attention.
6. If you think you are being followed, drive to the nearest public place and blow the horn - do not drive home.
7. Do not pick up hitchhikers.
8. Have a flashlight in the glove box or in the vehicle for emergencies at night.

If you have car trouble:

1. Raise the hood of your car half way. If your vehicle does not permit this, raise it full way.
2. Lock yourself in the car and wait for the police or a service truck.
3. If a stranger offers to help, do not get out. Open the window slightly and ask the person to call a service truck.
4. Carry a cell phone if possible.
