The Cobourg Police volunteers were formed in June 1996
and and since that time has become an integral and indispensible
part of the Cobourg Police Service.
A Community Policing Consultative Committee was formed
in 1995 by Inspector Paul Sweet. The mandate of the
committee was to make recommendations on community policing
in Cobourg. The Committee undertook a very successful
community survey. The results of that survey helped
the Committee to make a number of recommendations to
then Chief Dan McDougall and the Cobourg Police Services Board.
The volunteer program was one of a number of recommendations
made by the Community Consultative Committee to the
Cobourg Police Services Board in 1996.
Starting with six volunteers and strong support of
the Police Service, the group, led by Bill Crozier,
quickly established policies and started duties that
supported the Department.
New "Community Policing" initiatives being
implemented by Chief John Kay were strengthened by the
activities of the Cobourg Police Volunteers.
