Reports of thefts have occurred on Hamilton Avenue, Bayview Court, D’Arcy Street, White Street, Spragge Crescent, Barbara Street and Sandmere Crescent.
Police only have a partial list of stolen items which include satellite radio systems, garbage tags, sunglasses, cameras, hockey sticks, radios, cell phones and money.
police busy with impaired drivers and licence suspensions
Over the past weekend, Cobourg Police arrested two people for impaired driving and an additional two received 12-hour suspensions for alcohol consumption.
The first incident involved a car traveling southbound on William Street, which police observed being operated in an erratic manner. This occurred at 2:24 a.m., on Saturday, July 12. Upon stopping the car, the driver was agitated, sarcastic and uncooperative. He had the odour of alcohol on his breath.
After failing a road-side breath test, he was arrested and returned to the police office where an intoxylizer test produced readings over twice the legal limit. The 24 year old Grafton man has been charged with Impaired Driving and Driving a Motor Vehicle in Contravention of G2 Licensing Conditions.
Less that an hour later, police stopped a vehicle on Elgin Street East and when the 19 year old male driver from Roseneath blew a ‘warn’ on the road-side breath test, he was given a 12-hour licence suspension. His car was towed to a garage.
Later on Saturday evening at approximately 8:45 p.m., Cobourg Police on patrol on Elgin Street West near Burnham Street, observed a car traveling westbound and weaving back and forth.
The vehicle was stopped and a 33 year old Port Hope man was found to be intoxicated and he was arrested for impaired driving. Back at the police office he blew almost three times the legal limit.
The final drinking and driving occurrence involved a 19 year old man from Oshawa striking a tree with his car on Monk Street. He showed signs of alcohol consumption and blew a ‘warn’ on the road-side breath test.
He has been charged with Careless Driving and he also received a 12-hour licence suspension.
At 1:30 a.m., Sunday morning July 13, a Ball Street resident observed two teen enter their unlocked vehicle parked on Ball Street. The vehicle owner chased the teens south to King Street where they disappeared.
The only description given to police was that they were older teens wearing ball caps, shorts and back packs. One teen possibly had a skateboard. Nothing was reported stolen from the vehicle.
Another vehicle parked at the VIA train station over the weekend was broken into and items stolen. Police do not have a list of the items missing.
A Bayview Crescent and a Hamilton Avenue family also had their vehicles entered during the early morning hours of Monday, July 14. The Hamilton Avenue homeowner actually confronted two females who told him that they were at a party in the area and now they were lost.
A wallet and debit card is missing from the Hamilton Avenue incident.
Cobourg Police are investigating another theft of gasoline from a local gas bar.
On Wednesday afternoon, July 9 at around 3:00 p.m., a man filled his pickup truck with $142.00 worth of gas at the Petro Canada station on Division Street then drove off without paying.
The white pickup truck, possibly a Ford, was last seen heading northbound on Division Street. There were two red ladders attached to the top of the truck.
The male driver is in his 40’s. No other information is available, however the staff at the gas bar will be checking security camera footage in hopes of obtaining a licence number.
On Tuesday, July 8 at 3:00 p.m., a collision occurred on Division Street in front of KFC.
A car was exiting the parking lot of KFC attempting to proceed northbound. A southbound car had stopped in the curb lane to allow the turn and the driver even waved the turning car out onto the roadway.
Unfortunately another southbound car in the centre lane did not realize what was unfolding in front of him until he was unable to get stopped in time to avoid striking the turning car.
The driver of the car exiting KFC, a 40 year old Colborne woman has been charged with making an Unsafe Turn.
There were no injuries and both cars were driven from the scene. The unknown vehicle responsible for waving the car out did not stay at the collision site.
Police remind drivers to be especially careful when another drivers indicates a clear way by waving you through or out onto the roadway. An unexpected vehicle can appear from just about anywhere and you are ultimately responsible for your driving actions.
