Cobourg Police have charged a 37 year old Colborne woman with fraud in connection to her giving false information to police when applying for a criminal record check.
The accused woman provided her driver’s licence which she knew had her date of birth incorrect and she also used the false date of birth on the Access to Information Waiver form.
Police determined that the accused used the wrong date of birth in an attempt to defraud police in order to obtain a criminal record check with no convictions showing.
On Saturday evening, November 28 around 7:20 p.m., Cobourg Police were called to King Street West apartment in response to calls about assaults taking place.
The investigation revealed that a 40 year old man, who had been staying with friends as he had no permanent home, had assaulted another man and a female who were living there. The accused had been drinking and for an unknown reason released his rage on the occupants.
The male victim was punched in the face and kicked in the back and the female was tossed against a wall and thrown over a coffee table onto a couch.
Moments later another tenant from upstairs came to the top of the stair and when he asked what was happening, the accused approached him and punched him in the side of the head.
The accused was immediately arrested and returned to the police office. None of the victims required medical treatment however the female complained of soreness to her shoulder, an arm and a leg. The male occupant/victim suffered a swollen nose and upper lip and soreness to his ribs, chest and back.
The accused has been charged with three counts of assault and one count of failing to comply with a probation order. In September he was placed on probation for an assault conviction.
Sometime between 11:30 p.m., Friday night, November 27 and late afternoon on Saturday, November 28, a residence on Chipping Park Boulevard was entered by way of forcing a patio door open.
The owner of the house was in the process of moving in when he discovered the break in and the house had been unoccupied overnight.
The suspect(s) stole a 24” by 12” toolbox which contained approximately $300.00 worth of assorted hand tools.
Early Saturday morning, November 28 at 4:50 a.m., Cobourg Police checked a car parked on Division Street with two occupants inside. The car was facing south with and its head and rear tail lights on.
The officer quickly determined the male behind the wheel had been drinking and showed signs of impairment. He was subsequently arrested and when unable to produce a driver’s licence, he gave police a health card which was not his. He stuck to the name on the card until police determined sometime later that he used someone else’s identification.
In the meantime, the accused man, a 24 year old Cobourg resident, was given a breath test which resulted in readings of more than twice the legal limit.
The accused has been charged with care and control of a motor vehicle while impaired, exceeding 80 mg of alcohol in100ml of blood, obstructing police and personating.
He is also currently before the courts on a previous impaired driving charge.
Over the past week, Cobourg Police have investigated more vehicle entries and theft of contents.
Targeted vehicles were parked on Burnham Street, at the VIA train station lot, Frei Street and Sutherland Crescent.
Stolen items include two Sony Video cameras, valued at $880.00, a Tom Tom GPS with adapter valued at $242.00, a Garmin GPS worth $600.00, a $400.00 pair of new prescription sunglasses plus vehicle registration and insurance documents and personal papers.
Police believe all vehicles had been left unlocked as none sustained any damage from being forced open.
A two-vehicle collision occurred in the intersection of William Street and University Avenue on Thursday, November 19 at 7:35 a.m.
A vehicle travelling southbound on William Street failed to stop for a red light and struck a pickup truck travelling westbound through the intersection on a green light. The impact spun the vehicle that was struck 180 degrees.
The 45 year old female driver of the offending vehicle, a Port Hope resident, has been charged with disobeying a red light.
Both vehicles required to be towed from the scene. There were no reports of any personal injuries.
On Wednesday, November 18 at approximately 11:30 p.m., a man was observed by a witness opening a small window at a George Street apartment building and crawling inside.
Police were called and arrived at the scene and observed the window ajar. They observed the suspect inside the storage area of the building.
Police entered the hallway of the building, breached the locked door and entered the storage area. Police called out for the suspect to come out with his hands in the air, which he did.
Jeffery Wigmore, 19 years old of Cobourg, was arrested. He has been charged with break and enter as well as three counts of breaching his probation orders. He was held in custody for a bail hearing.
Cobourg Police investigated a collision on Hibernia Street involving a northbound car striking the rear door of a parked car.
The collision occurred on Wednesday, November 18 at 6:15 p.m.
The owner of the parked car had gone to her vehicle to retrieve something and had the driver’s-side rear door open when the second car approached from the south and struck the open door.
There was substantial damage done to the parked car. The 76 year old Cobourg female driving on Hibernia Street has been charged with careless driving.
Around 5:30 – 6:00 a.m., on Sunday morning, November 15, a Walton Street homeowner heard a noise in her back yard and when she looked outside, she saw a dark shadow by the shed door.
After knocking on the window, the homeowner went downstairs and turned on an exterior light, however no one appeared to be there.
Cobourg Police attended later, as the complainant did not call for a couple of hours, and seized an old-rusty cutter near the shed door. The lock on the shed door was not cut, but there was some damage to the lock and door trim.
Cobourg Police and Fire Services responded to a vehicle fire early Sunday morning around 4:00 a.m. A vehicle parked in a residential driveway on College Street was fully engulfed in flames.
The investigation revealed that the car had been parked at this location at 3:00 p.m. the afternoon before. It may have been left unlocked.
The fire appears to have been deliberately started by someone and the fire started in the passenger compartment. The fire service report that upon their arrival, the driver’s-side window was half way down and the car was unlocked.
The car was completed destroyed and police have no suspects.
Early Sunday morning, November 15 at 1:15 a.m., Cobourg Police were sent to King Street East near Brook Road South. At this location, a male citizen was waiting with two men.
The two detainees, aged 18 and 21, and both from Cobourg, had knocked over several large mail boxes.
With the guidance of police, the men returned to areas on Ruttan Terrace, East House Crescent and Delanty Road were the mail boxes were ‘righted’.
No damage occurred so the men were cautioned and sent on their way.
cobourg man given four tickets and had vehicle seized
A routine vehicle traffic stop early Saturday morning, November 14 at 3:00 a.m., resulted in a 40 year Cobourg man receiving four tickets and having his car towed away. The vehicle was stopped on College Street.
The accused, Myles McMinn, was charged with driving a motor vehicle with no licence, using an improper licence plate, failing to apply for a permit to become owner of the vehicle and failure to surrender an insurance card.
He was also served with notices for two driver’s licence suspensions.
On Friday afternoon, November 13, a domestic dispute occurred at an east-end residence and resulted in police being called.
The investigation revealed that a 27 year old female and a 34 year man had been arguing for some time and the incident ended when the female threw a foot- long kitchen knife at the male. The knife did not strike the victim.
Police arrested the female and she has been charged with assault with a weapon. She has been held for a bail hearing.
Cobourg Police are investigating the break, enter and the theft at the Grace Christian Reformed Church on King Street East. The incident occurred sometime late Thursday evening, November 12 or early Friday morning.
The culprit(s) used a metal sign post to smash a rear basement window allowing access to the Church. Once inside, considerable damage was done to doors and windows and some rooms were ransacked.
Stolen items so far, include an RCS Mixing Console, a Mega Amp 400 stereo amplifier, a powered speaker and a guitar amplifier. Total value is approximately $4,700.00.
It appears that a truck or van was used during the break in.
Security staff at Northumberland Mall called Cobourg Police Wednesday evening, November 11 around 8:15 p.m., as they had detained a young male for stealing.
Police arrived and arrested a 16 year old Cobourg male.
The investigation revealed that the accused teen had stolen items from Zeller’s and also money from the bowling alley.
The accused has been charged with theft and possession of stolen property.
Cobourg Police investigated a two-car collision on Wednesday, November 11 at 1:13 p.m. The crash occurred on Durham Street.
The driver of a car pulled out of a private driveway and struck a southbound car on Durham Street. The 64 year old Cobourg woman driving the exiting car has been charged with failing to yield.
No one was injured and both cars are still drivable.
A 27 year old Camborne man has been charged with failing to yield as the result of attempting to turn northbound onto Division Street from the driveway at the VIA station.
When he pulled out onto Division Street, his van was struck by a car travelling southbound on Division Street.
The vehicles were able to be driven from the scene and no one was hurt.
