Cobourg Police were called to the area of a D’Arcy Street school on Sunday evening around 7:35 p.m., in response to a report of teens hanging around the school and on the roof.
A group of 7-8 youths were located on the ground and after questioning them a subsequent investigation resulted in a 17 year old Cobourg male being arrested and charged with 6 different offences.
The accused initially gave police a false name. He had also been drinking and was in violation of an existing probation order.
He has been held in police custody pending a bail hearing and is charged with three counts of failing to comply with a probation order, two counts under the Liquor Licence Act and also a charge of obstructing police.
On Saturday afternoon, August 29 around 4:30 p.m., staff at the local LCBO store observed an elderly man take a 40 ounce bottle of Scotch off the shelf and place it in a plastic bag, tie the top of the bag and then leave the store.
He was followed outside and asked if he had forgotten to pay for something to which he responded no. He refused to allow staff to look inside the plastic bag and walked away pushing his walker.
Although his name is not known, he attends the liquor store weekly. He is a white male between 80-90 years of age and was wearing a white fishing-style hat.
Police were notified of the incident about 20 minutes after it occurred as staff were unsure if they were going to report it, but decided to later..
Just before noon on Saturday, August 29, an unknown woman walked into the OLCO gas bar office and stole $450.00 in cash.
All of this took place as the sole employee was outside serving a customer at the propane filling station about 100 ‘ south of the station. A witness sitting at the gas pumps observed the suspect enter the gas bar and then informed the employee.
The suspect was on foot and came from and exited into a wooded area behind the gas bar.
She is described as a white female, 25–30 years old, and 150 pounds with a round face, good skin and large-dark eyes. At the time she was wearing a grey track suit and a black baseball cap with a pony tail through the back.
A local car dealership has reported to Cobourg Police that a man took a van for a test drive on Thursday, August 27 and two hours later called the dealership stating that he was interested in purchasing the vehicle but could not return it for few more hours.
As the dealership would be closed, arrangements were made to return the van the following morning. Around 9:30 a.m., the next morning, the man called the dealership again reporting that the van had broken down near Elgin Street and that he now was not interested in purchasing it.
Dealership personnel recovered the van which was in fine shape however there were approximately 500 additional kilometers on the odometer.
A police investigation revealed that the suspect had moved from one location in Cobourg to another and probably travelled to Barrie to retrieve additional items. He and his family lived in Barrie before moving to Cobourg.
Police have not been able to locate the suspect and an investigation into theft by conversion and mischief is on-going.
On Tuesday night, August 25 at approximately 10:00 p.m., residents in the Coverdale Avenue/Gardiner Crescent area heard a commotion outside their homes on the road.
Police were called and told by witnesses that the man had been dragging the woman along the road by her hair while also kicking and punching her.
The man was immediately arrested for domestic-related assault and also for breach of probation. He was on probation for a previous assault conviction.
The Port Hope couple had attended a funeral for a close friend earlier in the evening and had since consumed an unknown amount of alcohol.
Cobourg Police are investigating the assault and robbery of two Alexandria Drive residents.
Around 7:30 p.m., on Tuesday, August 25 the couple was preparing dinner when two men and a woman entered their home demanding pills or money. The two male intruders assault the male occupant by punching him and eventually holding a knife to his throat.
After stealing $350.00 from his wallet, the intruders trashed the kitchen area. They then left in a vehicle driven by a second female who had remained in the vehicle all the time.
A short time later, the O.P.P. stopped the vehicle and arrested three occupants and returned them to Cobourg Police. One of the males was not in vehicle and a warrant for his arrest will be issued.
The four accused, all from the Hastings and Campbellford area, are facing an assortment of charges including robbery, break and enter, uttering threats, mischief, assault and one breach of probation.
One accused was released on a Promise to Appear form for a future court date and the other two have been held in custody for a bail hearing.
The male occupant received minor cuts to his head and a swollen eye. The female was not harmed.
Two Kitchener residents, a brother and sister, stopped in the parking lot at the Midtown Mall on Tuesday night, August 25 just minutes before midnight, to check the oil in their car. They were on their way to New Brunswick.
While checking the oil, a male suspect approached them on foot and engaged them in some small talk. The suspect asked the man for $5.00 to buy some food and coffee.
The victim did not see the harm in giving him $5.00 however when he pulled a wad of money from his pocket, the suspect grabbed it from him and fled. He got almost $1,000.00 in twenties and was seen running into a parking lot on Munroe Street.
The area was searched unsuccessfully by police.
The suspect is a white male, 5’10” to 5’11” with a thin build and face. He has grey hair and goatee, but no moustache.
At the time he was wearing a dark-coloured vest, grey track pants, white running shoes, a black beanie-style cap with red-line design throughout and wearing a bone or sea shell necklace along with a small-silver chain and black fanny pack.
On Tuesday afternoon, August 25 at approximately 5:00 p.m., Cobourg Police and Fire Services responded to the area of Lake Ontario at the foot of Henry Street. Reports had come in that three people were in trouble in the lake and screaming for help.
Upon the arrival of police and fire personnel, the women had been pulled out of the water and were safely ashore.
The investigation revealed those three women, two from Cambridge and one from Burlington, had been swimming in the lake and had been caught up in the undertow of the large waves and was being pulled away from the shoreline further in to the lake.
Three Cobourg women rescued the swimmers using styrofoam noodles and a rope to pull them to safety.
Police and Animal Control personnel are investigation an unprovoked attack by a family dog on a 13 year old girl.
The incident occurred on Friday evening, August 21 at approximately 8:00 p.m., while a group of young girls were sitting around a patio table in the backyard of an Alexandria Drive residence.
The two year old dog had just been brought out of the residence and put on a leash in the backyard, when it suddenly ran up to the victim, jumped up at her and bit her in the ear, tearing off the top portion.
The young victim was taken to Northumberland Hills Hospital by ambulance and subsequently transferred to Sick Kid’s Hospital in Toronto to undergo surgery on her detached ear.
Animal Control officials have placed the dog in quarantine for ten days. Charges under the Dog Owner’s Liability Act are pending.
The Victoria Park Information Booth, located along the boardwalk at the beach, was discovered to have been broken into sometime prior to 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, August 22, when it was found by a town employee.
The molded plastic structure was still locked however the doors were off their hinges.
Items stolen from the booth include a number of personal clothing articles, two folding- lawn chairs and a six-string classical acoustic guitar, orange and brown in colour.
In the early hours of Saturday, August 22, someone used a pry bar to force open the rear doors on two adjacent King Street West businesses.
Empire Gifts was entered however the owner believes that nothing was taken. The suspect(s) may have been spooked and fled.
Next door at Jake’s, a motion sensor tripped an audible alarm once entry to the rear storage area occurred. Police believe that the alarm caused the suspect(s) to flee before they were able to steal anything.
A search of the immediate area, specifically in some long grass, turned up a metal pry bar with fresh paint on it matching the door frame.
It will cost the store owners over a $1,000.00 to repair the damage.
On Friday evening, August 21 at around 11:00 p.m., Cobourg Police responded to an alarm at Shoppers Drug Mart which turned out to be a false.
While checking the outside of business, police located a man in the north-end loading area who was trying to conceal something.
Police observed the man drop something to the ground which was subsequently recovered by police and believe the substance is cocaine.
The 24 year old Cobourg man was arrested and while being searched, police found more suspected cocaine in his jean pocket.
The accused has been charged with possessing crack cocaine and also two counts of failing to comply with a probation order, one condition was not to possess any non-medically prescribed drugs.
Cobourg Police investigated a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of King Street East and Brook Road North, on Thursday, August 20 at 2:30 p.m.
A car travelling eastbound on King Street was attempting to turn left onto Brook Road when it was struck by a west bound vehicle on King Street.
The driver of the turning car, a 17 year old Cobourg female, has been charged with making an unsafe turn. An 18 year old male passenger in her car suffered minor injuries and did attend Northumberland Hills Hospital for treatment.
A business on Strathy Road had its security motion alarm tripped early Wednesday morning, August 19 at 1:10 a.m.
Upon arrival at Showtime TV and Stereo, they discovered that the front door lock had been spun and removed. Police searched the store and no one was found inside.
Once the owner arrived, it was discovered that a TV had been stolen. It is a 46” Sony Bravia LCD 1080 TV, black in colour and worth $1,288.00.

On Tuesday, August 18 at approximately 6:40 p.m., Cobourg Police received a call from Walmart that a man had just left the store with a piece of electronic equipment in his shopping cart which he did not attempt to pay for.
Police were there quickly and intercepted the man in the parking lot. He was still pushing his shopping cart across the lot with the stole item inside.
A 22 year old Cobourg man was arrested on the spot and charged with theft of a HP LCD monitor, valued at $158.00. He is also facing charges of possession of stolen property, breach of probation and breach of an undertaking. He was on probation and also currently before the court on other charges and convictions occurring in the past month.
Many of the police calls for service over this past weekend were for liquor infractions. Cobourg Police conducted foot patrols around the clock and encountered many violations in the Victoria Park area and beach. Most offences were for possessing alcohol in the park and in open containers. The hot muggy weather was certainly a contributing factor as many people enjoying the beach brought alcohol beverages in their coolers. Police laid 49 liquor licence act charges during the weekend.
The Ribfest event was well organized and staffed by capable security personnel and was not a factor in the numerous alcohol-related offences.
Police remind the public that it is an offence to possess alcohol in Victoria Park, including the beach, whether it is open or not.
On Saturday, August 8 at approximately 6:00 p.m., Cobourg Police executed a search warrant at a William Street apartment.
The search resulted in the seizure of a large quantity of marihuana and vials with cannabis hash oil residue, assorted pills, a stolen rifle with ammunition and a blow gun with darts.
The occupants of the apartment, a 52 year old male and a 36 year old female have been charged with six counts each of drug and weapon offences.
The seized drugs are estimated to be worth $100,000.00.
Both accused parties will appear in Cobourg Court in September.
On Thursday afternoon, August 6 at 4:21 p.m., a truck was attempting to turn right onto William Street off of Harden Street. This is intersection at the entrance to the former Kraft plant.
As the truck was turning, two cyclists appeared from the south along the sidewalk and one of bicycles struck the truck. Both bicycles were being operated by two 13 girl old Cobourg girls.
The girl operating the bike that struck the truck was taken to hospital with a suspected fractured leg.
She has also been charged under the Highway Traffic Act for riding in or along a crosswalk.
As a result of a noise complaint being received by Cobourg Police on Thursday night, August 6 just before midnight, a Perry Street resident will be charged by police under the town noise bylaw.
This particular location has been source of repeated noise complaints and verbal warning by police have been unsuccessful.
The offending noise is usually loud music being played outside.
Cobourg Police are investigating two reports of vehicles being entered and property stolen while occupants were enjoying the beach.
Both vehicles were entered on Thursday afternoon, August 6.
The first report involved a van being entered and included the theft of a Nintendo DS and games and theft from a purse of $140.00 (USD) and several personal bank cards.
Items taken from the second vehicle are being listed by the owner and will be given to police when completed.
Over the past long weekend, Cobourg Police responded to seven complaints of excessive noise.
All but one call originated from gatherings and parties at private residences around town. Loud music and talking caused neighbours to call police.
There was one call to the waterfront area after 2:00 a.m., on Monday morning. Music was being played loudly from a parked vehicle, which had all its doors open.
No charges have been laid, however those responsible were warned concerning the noise bylaw and complied with the police request to stop the noise.
On Friday afternoon, July 31 at 3:40 p.m., a car was exiting the Via station and while attempting to turn south on Division Street, struck a southbound van. The driver of the car has been charged with making an unsafe turn.
There were no injuries; however both vehicles required tows from the scene.
Cobourg Police are investigating the theft of a laptop computer for an office at the Fleming Building.
The computer was stolen between Tuesday, July 28 and Thursday, July 30. The six month old laptop has a Toshiba 15.4” display. The model and serial numbers are on file with police.
