Cobourg Police are investigating the break, enter and theft at a Battell Street home. The incident occurred while the home owner was away from between Tuesday evening, July 28 and Thursday morning, July 30.
Entry was gained by smashing a rear basement window and the suspect exited the residence by way of the back door.
The suspect(s) stole a Hewlett Packard digital camera, a memory card and an assortment of jewellery items. The total value of the stolen items is approximately $640.00.
At approximately 5:00 a.m., on Tuesday morning, July 28, Cobourg Police were called to a residence on Spring Street in regards to an altercation.
The investigation resulted in two people being arrested. An 18 year old male and a 16 year old female have both been charged with assault and uttering threats.
The male has also been charged with one count of breach of undertaking for a similar incident he was involved in less than two weeks ago.
Cobourg Police have charged a 57 year old Cobourg woman with mischief after an incident near College Street involving the trimming of a tree.
On Monday afternoon, July 27 just after the lunch hour, a commercial tree trimming company was trimming a tree near the accused home. The woman became irate at the noise so she yelled and swore at the workers.
A short time later when the truck was leaving the work area, the accused through an egg from her front porch, striking the truck just behind the cab.
Once she realized that the police had been called, she left the area in her car by using the sidewalk, as the work truck had parked on the street blocking her driveway.
Soon after police arrived at the scene, she returned to the house and was informed by an officer that she would be charged with mischief.
On Friday evening July 24 around 6:15 p.m., Cobourg Police attended at Zeller’s in Northumberland Mall, on information that store security had detained a shoplifter.
The investigation revealed that two men were in the store and had taken gum and chocolate bars from the shelves and stashed them in a bag one of the men was carrying. The duo then left the store without paying for the items.
A store security employee detained one of the suspects outside the store in the mall area however the second suspect fled.
Police were able to arrest the second suspect later that evening at his home.
Two Cobourg men, both 18 years old, have been charged with theft and possession of stolen property. One accused has also been charged with a breach of probation.
On Saturday July 25 at 10:50 p.m., Cobourg Police were notified of a possible impaired driver operating a green minivan in the D’Arcy and Elgin Street area.
Officers located the vehicle approximately one hour later being driven on King Street East. The vehicle was stopped and as a result a 49 year old Cobourg man was arrested and charged with impaired driving and driving with over .08 mg.
Also arrested were two passengers from the Grafton area, for being intoxicated in a public place.
All were held in custody and released Sunday morning.
Cobourg Police checked a car early Saturday morning July 25 at approximately 2:00 a.m. in the parking area of Peace Park.
As a result of the check, police found 2.7 grams of marijuana and seeds in the car. The owner of the vehicle, a 17 year old Hamilton Township teen, has been charged with possession of a controlled substance.
Police also seized a quantity of drug paraphernalia. There were also three others males in the car, two 17 year olds and a 16 year old.
Sometime overnight on Wednesday July 22 or early Thursday morning, a business on Division Street called WHATEVER, was entered and items were stolen.
The business is across the road from the No Frills plaza and the suspect(s) entered by smashing the rear-door window.
The owner reported to police that stolen items include numerous PS2 and XBOX 360 games, Nintendo game-cube games, four guitars that are used for the video game Guitar Hero as well as numerous CDs.
On Wednesday morning July 22, Chief of Police Paul Sweet had the opportunity to have a private meeting with Attorney General Chris Bentley. Minister Bentley took time again from his busy schedule to drop by the Cobourg Police Station and meet with the Chief.
The discussion centered on the relationship of local police and the judicial process. Chief Sweet had the opportunity to present some of the local issues to the Minister and compliment the fine relationship with the Crown Attorney’s office and senior Judicial Officials.
Chief Sweet was very impressed with Minister Bentley coming personally to meet with ministries’ partners.
“Issues can get watered down and clouded going through the many levels of a government ministry, it is very refreshing being able to communicate in an informal fashion face to face like this”. “My compliments to the Attorney General”, Chief Sweet said.
While on patrol on Monday, July 20 and travelling on Division Street, a Cobourg Police officer came upon items on the roadway which was blocking one lane.
The officer discovered that two-large stainless-steel radiators had slid out of the back of a fleeing pickup truck after having been stolen from a nearby business.
The actual owner of the business was also present at the scene and he explained to police that he had observed two men steal the radiators from the rear of his business. The radiators are approximately 3 ½ feet by 4 feet and worth $4,000.00 each.
The pickup truck involved was stopped a short time later in town and the two male occupants were arrested. The subsequent investigation revealed that one of the accused had previously stolen three more of these radiators last week and had taken them to an area scrap dealer for cash.
Two Cobourg men, aged 37 and 40 years have been charged with theft over $5,000.00 and possession of property obtained by crime.
Cobourg Police investigated a collision on University Avenue West on Thursday, July 9 at 9:30 a.m.
A westbound car swerved to avoid a squirrel on the roadway and ended up striking a parked car.
The parked car was unoccupied. The driver of the westbound car, a 51 year old Cobourg woman, was not injured. She has been charged with failing to drive in a marked lane.
Cobourg Police received calls about six more vehicle entries and thefts which occurred overnight on Monday, July 6 or early Tuesday morning.
The vehicles were parked on Ruttan Terrace, Abbott Boulevard, James Street East and King Street East.
Aside from the vehicles being ransacked, stolen items include sunglasses, loose change, vehicle and personal cards and documents, cell phone chargers and a satellite radio.
Police are concerned that this ‘easy-picking’ theft trend will continue as long as people leave their vehicles unlocked.
A two-car collision at the intersection of William Street and University Avenue has resulted in one driver being charged.
The crash occurred on Tuesday, July 7 at 7:20 p.m.
The charged driver, an 83 year old Cobourg woman, was southbound on William Street and attempting to turn left onto University Avenue when she struck a northbound car. She has been charged with making an unsafe turn.
There were no injuries however both vehicles required tows from the scene.
On Monday, July 6, Cobourg Police investigated three incidents involving parked vehicles.
The first call involved the windshield of a car parked in a residential driveway on James Street West being smashed. A beer bottle was found on the front lawn.
The two other occurrences involved unlocked vehicles being entered and property stolen. One vehicle was parked outside the owners home on Spencer Street West and the thief stole a red first aid kit, $10.00 in coins and a $300.00 am/fm radio with CD player.
The second entry was made into a car parked at Walmart. On this occasion, a purse was stolen from between the front seats. The victim told police that she searched area garbage cans and found her purse in a can near Quiznos Subs. All that was missing was $23.00. Her credit cards and personal documents were still in the purse.
During the four-day waterfront festival this year, Cobourg Police were involved in 83 incidents or calls for service. As well as several officers posted at the waterfront for all four days, an additional 30 foot patrols took place by regular town patrol officers.

The Liquor Licence Act incidents resulted in over 60 individuals being charged, mostly for public intoxication or possession.
Early Friday morning, July 3 at approximately 12:30 a.m., Cobourg Police were called to a Havelock Street residence to investigate the report of an assault.
The investigation resulted in the arrest of a 44 year old resident. The accused allegedly was having an argument with his teenage son when the man’s 41 year old female partner got between them in hopes of stopping the argument and was pushed into some furniture.
The couple then went downstairs where the accused punched the female several times in the face and then pushed her to the floor.
She suffered a swollen upper lip and bloody nose.
The accused has been charged with assault and held in custody pending a bail hearing.
On Wednesday, July 1, over 30 tickets were issued for violations under the Liquor Licence Act. Most offences were for possession of alcohol and public intoxication.
On Tuesday evening June 30 at 11:52 p.m., Cobourg Police were sent to a report of a man lying on the sidewalk on Division Street.
When officers arrived, they found a young male lying unconscious on the sidewalk. The victim had suffered trauma to his head and a puddle of blood was visible under his head and he was bleeding from his ears. There were also cuts on his arms and legs.
Medical personnel arrived on scene and the man was taken to Northumberland Hills Hospital and then air lifted to St.Michael’s Hospital in Toronto.
Investigation revealed the victim is a 20 year old man from Toronto. He had attended a house party in Cobourg and left the party sometime after 11:00 p.m.
It is possible his serious injuries were caused by a fall; possibly from climbing a wall or from a roof. He is presently being operated on at St. Michael’s Hospital and believed to be in stable condition. The investigation is on-going.
