Cobourg Police have arrested Robert Murney, a 47 year old Cobourg resident, and charged him with attempting to procure a female under 18 Years and Soliciting for the Purpose of Prostitution.
The criminal charges resulted from the accused knowing the 16 year old female victim while he was an active officer with the Cobourg Army Cadets. She was a cadet under his command.
The accused has been on inactive status with the cadets for the past two years, meaning he had not been actively participating with the group or carrying out his duties. The contact was made outside the cadet group and not in his capacity as leader.
Cobourg Police are investigating two more cases of vehicles being damaged while parked at residences.
Sometime during the weekend a vehicle parked on Westwood Drive was scratched to the tune of approximately $1,500.00. The vehicle was damaged on the hood and roof areas.
Late Monday evening June 29, a pickup truck parked on Rockingham Court had its front tires slashed. Police had received a report about the same time of several youths throwing things at passing vehicles in the vicinity. No suspects were located.
Cobourg Police are hoping for the public’s assistance in locating the individual responsible for damaging two large tents at the waterfront, late Friday night, June 26.
The vandal cut support ropes to 13 upright posts at the tent located on the outdoor rink site and also the ropes to 27 upright posts at a Lion’s Club tent on the east side of the park.
In both cases, sections of each tent collapsed.
Most likely a knife or other large-sharp-cutting tool was used.
Police did speak to one area resident who said that at approximately 11:30 p.m., she saw a young male standing near one of the tents and when he saw her, he fled the area. No other description of this potential suspect was available.

A Bell telephone official advised Cobourg Police that someone forced open the coin box on an outdoor pay phone located at the Midtown Mall. The incident occurred on Thursday, June 25 at approximately 9:00 p.m.
Cash in the amount of $25.50 was stolen and approximately $1,680.00 damage was done to the phone.
Early Saturday morning, June 20 at around 2:00 a.m., Cobourg Police were called to an altercation on Third Street in front of Kelly’s Homelike Inn.
Upon their arrival, police observed three men walking northbound. One man was holding a second man by the neck and he was yelling and swearing at him.
Police intervened and as a result arrested a 34 year old Pickering man. The accused was arrested for causing a disturbance by swearing. He continued to be agitated by the police presence and once inside the police car he struck the door and screen cage causing damage. He also spat all over the inside of the cruiser which did subsequently require sanitizing.
The accused was also found to be on probation from previous convictions in Oshawa. He is now facing charges of cause disturbance, mischief and breach of probation.
Overnight on Wednesday, June 17, police investigated two separate reports concerning vehicles.
The first incident was the theft of a wallet from a pickup truck parked on Spencer Street overnight on Sunday, June 14. The owner told police that he had mistakenly left a window down. His wallet contained a driver’s licence, SIN card and a couple of bank cards.
The second call involved a brick being thrown through the windshield of a vehicle parked on King Street East early Wednesday morning, June 17.
Cobourg Police were called to a Division Street residence just after midnight on Wednesday, June 17.
The occupant of the residence told police that man known to him, had appeared at his door and was let inside. The visitor became verbally upset apparently concerning a child custody matter.
The resident/victim tried to avoid a confrontation and went into a bedroom. He was followed by accused who grabbed a dresser drawer and hit the victim over the head cutting him. He was then kicked in the ribs and hit again with a light fixture. While still trying to protect himself in the corner of the room, the accused struck the victim again over the head, this time with a porcelain giraffe which smashed and cut the victims head again.
The victim managed to grab a towel to try to stop the bleeding from his head but not before he was pulled from the corner by the hair.
The accused told the victim to stay away from this residence and threatened to hurt him or anyone else who came here. The accused then left.
The victim went to neighbor and called police. Once police arrived, he was transported to hospital by ambulance and received a number of stitches to his head.
Later in the day, police arrested a 31 year old Cobourg man and charged him with assault causing bodily harm and assault with a weapon.
Two Colborne residents met unexpectedly at an intersection in Cobourg on Tuesday, June16 around 1:30 p.m.
The two cars were both eastbound on King Street East and as they approached a red light at Brook Road North, the first car stopped however the trailing car did not. It struck the rear of the front car.
The 39 year old female driver of the second car has been charged with careless driving.
There were no injuries and both vehicles were driven from the scene.
On Monday evening, June 15 around 9:00 p.m., two men attended at the Metro food store at Northumberland Mall and attempted to purchase all the cigarettes that the store had in stock.
When staff became suspicious, the men left the store and exited the lot. The description of their vehicle was given to police who located the vehicle a short time later on Elgin Street.
The subsequent investigation resulted in the arrest of two Scarborough men aged 20 and 21 years old. Both accused were in violation of numerous court orders. A search of the vehicle revealed a quantity of unsigned credit cards, a pocket knife and five cartons of cigarettes.
The men have been held in custody pending a bail hearing. The 20 year old is charged with possession of a weapon (knife), three counts of breaching recognizance’s and four counts of possessing fraudulent credit cards.
The 21 year old is charged with two counts of breach of probation and four counts of possessing fraudulent credit cards.
Sometime over the past weekend, an unlocked vehicle parked at a residence on Glen Watford Drive was entered.
An expensive chemical water test kit was stolen from the vehicle. The kit was in a ridged black briefcase measuring approximately 20” in length, 20” in height and 8” wide.
Meters and other contents of the case were worth approximately $6,000.00.
On Monday morning, June 15 at approximately 9:30 a.m., Cobourg Police were called to a Sutherland Drive residence in response to a call of an assault.
The police investigation revealed that a 22 year old man, living common law at this residence, had become irate at his partner concerning feeding issues with her two young children.
The argument escalated to a physical confrontation and the accused punch the victim in the head, head butted her forehead and spit in her face. All the while she was being assaulted, she was holding onto her baby.
The victim and child managed to leave the residence and got to a neighbours house and police were called.
The accused man was arrested. He appeared for a bail hearing on Monday afternoon and was released on conditions; one of course was to stay away from the victim and the children.
Cobourg Police are investigating the break, enter and theft at an apartment on Division Street. Witnesses told police that they saw two males enter the building around 8:00 p.m., on Friday, June 12.
Stolen items include a DVD player and approximately 260 prescription pills.
The suspects were described as (1) 17-19 years old, 5’9” tall, 130 pounds wearing a red shirt and dark-blue hat: (2) 6’1” tall, 190 pounds with blonde- curly hair and wearing a blue and grey suit.
On Wednesday, June 10, a local resident reported to Cobourg Police that she just received a disturbing email in which the sender threatened to kill her and her family if a sum of money was not forward within 72 hours.
The sender claims to be with the ISHMAEL GHOST ISLAMIC GROUP and the money requested is to be sent to a person in London, England.
The email is quite extensive and goes into considerable detail about what the money will be used for and that the recipient’s family is being watched and monitored. The group is asking that $800.00 (U.S.) be sent to them via Western Union.
Police are sure that this is another money scam as similar messages have been received by people in the past.
Cobourg Police are releasing this incident to the general public to advise everyone that these threats are unfounded. The offenders will often target older adults and the vulnerable
With the arrival of summer, Cobourg Police will once again continue a zero tolerance approach to liquor violations, including Victoria Park and the waterfront.
Early Wednesday morning, June 10 around 1:30 a.m., an officer on foot patrol at the waterfront found two men consuming alcohol while sitting on a bench in the children’s play-equipment area.
Both men were Cobourg residents, aged 18 and 20 years, and were given a ticket for consuming alcohol in other than a licensed premise.
Motorists are reminded that you are required to stop your vehicle for an amber light as long as you have sufficient time to do it safely. The violation for running an amber light is the same as running a red light.
On Friday, June 5 at 1:36 p.m., a 65 year old Port Hope woman learned the lesson about amber lights the hard way and caused a collision and was charged for failing to yield.
The crash occurred at the intersection of Elgin Street West and Rogers Road.
The accused had been eastbound on Elgin Street and was slowing down for an amber light when she suddenly decided to drive through the light and struck a van which had been stopped to turn left across her path, thinking that she was stopping.
There were no injuries however the accuser’s car required to be towed from the scene.
Cobourg Police investigated at two-vehicle collision on Sunday, June 7 at 12:06 p.m., on Heath Street.
A vehicle had stopped on Heath Street waiting to turn into the rear lot at Wendy’s restaurant when a car travelling the same direction rear-ended him.
A 31 year old Courtice woman has been charged with following too close. There were no injuries and both vehicles were able to be driven from the scene.
On Tuesday evening, June 2 just after 9:00 p.m., Cobourg Police attended at No Frills on Division Street concerning a report of an unwanted person.
When police arrived, the store had closed. They located a man sitting in one of the aisles eating chips and dip. He had three open jars of dip and several open bags of chips around him.
The man was extremely intoxicated and refused to speak to grocery store staff or police. The 34 year old Cobourg man was arrested.
Further investigation revealed that the accused had also arrived at No Frills on a stolen bicycle and that earlier in the evening he had left a second stolen bike at the front of the Zellers store.
The accused has been charged with mischief, and two counts of theft, possession of stolen property and breach of probation. He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing Wednesday afternoon.
Sometime between 8:00 – 11:00 p.m., on Monday, June 1, a Huycke Street resident reported to police that someone entered his property and stole two lawnmowers and a chainsaw.
The lawnmowers were used and the only description available to police was that one was green and the other red. Both had Briggs and Statton engines.
The chainsaw was an electric Mastercraft, black in colour. Total value of the stolen items is approximately $300.00.
The same evening another lawnmower was stolen from a utility shed on Ontario Street. It is described as being an older gasoline mower, red in colour and worth approximately $100.00
Cobourg Police are investigating a break, enter and theft at Northumberland Grain and Agrico on Division Street.
Sometime over the past weekend, suspect(s) entered Northumberland Grain by forcing their way through a locked sliding door. Once inside they stole approximately $200.00 worth of Napa wrenches.
A trailer located on the site was also tampered with but not entered. Someone had pried the door handle off and removed screens from the windows.
On Sunday, May 31 at approximately 4:00 p.m., Cobourg Police were called to investigate a reported break, enter and theft at an Elgin Street East home.
The investigation revealed that the unlocked residence was entered sometime during the afternoon and while a household member was sleeping upstairs.
The owners reported to police that stolen items include an X-Box 360 and X-Box grand theft auto game, a laptop computer, a black wallet containing several hundred dollars, an I-Pod and an assortment of approximately 350 prescription pills.
On Saturday, May 30 at 12:30 p.m., Cobourg Police investigated a two-car collision on Division Street in front of the Ultramar Gas Bar.
A car driven by a 61 year old Baltimore man attempted to enter Division Street from the gas bar parking lot but struck a southbound car.
The driver of the exiting car has been charged with failing to yield. He was able to drive his car from the scene; however the car which had been traveling on Division Street required a tow. There were no injuries.
On Saturday morning, May 30 at 7:30 a.m., an 18 year Cobourg teen was located in a private recreational vehicle parked in a Cobourg residential driveway.
When confronted by the owners, the accused told them that he was homeless and the vehicle was unlocked. He also stated that he spent the night inside the vehicle.
The vehicle owners also reported to police that a quantity of beer was missing from the vehicle’s refrigerator.
The accused was arrested by police and has been charged with break, enter and theft as well as an additional 7 counts of breaching probation orders and court imposed undertakings.
Another unlocked vehicle fell victim to a thief sometime overnight on Thursday, May 29 or early Friday morning.
The vehicle was parked in a residential driveway on Cornell Crescent. The thief stole an amount of cash, a driver’s licence, ownership and insurance cards as well as a birth certificate and a couple of business credit cards.
Cobourg Police are investigating two separate incidents of vehicles being damaged while parked.
The first report involved two cuts into a convertible top of a vehicle parked in a residential driveway on Chapel Street. This occurred sometime overnight on Thursday, May 28 or early Friday morning.
The second vehicle damaged was a vehicle parked on Buchanan Street and on Sunday afternoon around 4:30 p.m., two young boys were seen breaking a window on the vehicle.
Police arrived and apprehended two-10 year old boys. They were driven to their parent’s homes where the investigation is continuing.
