Cobourg Police have a 37 year Cobourg man in custody as the result of an assault which occurred on Thursday, May 28.
It is alleged that the accused became enraged with his 33 year common-law wife and ended up spitting in her face.
The victim told police that there is a history of domestic violence and emotional and physical abuse between the couple and that she fears for her safety.
The accused has been held in custody for a bail hearing on Friday morning, May 29 in Cobourg court.
Cobourg Police investigated a three-vehicle collision on Wednesday, May 27 at 4:44 p.m.
The collision occurred at the intersection of Elgin Street West and Chipping Park Boulevard.
A car had been stopped on Chipping Park and attempted to turn left onto Elgin Street when it was struck by an eastbound vehicle on Elgin Street. The impact sent the eastbound vehicle into the westbound lane where it struck a third vehicle.
The driver of the car originally attempting to turn, a 54 year old Cobourg man, has been charged with failing to yield to oncoming traffic.
It has recently come to the attention of Cobourg Police that a hiring scam is occurring in the newspapers and on the internet.
It is an advertisement for job that people apply for. They are then told that they have landed the job and they are sent a cheque which they are asked to cash and to keep some of the money.
Then they are instructed to wire back to the company a set amount of money through Western Union. Of coarse the original cheque is a fake and is returned to the victim eventually. Hopefully the victim will not have wired their money to the scammer first.

On Thursday, May 21 at around 3:00 p.m., Cobourg Police observed a disturbance occurring outside of the Mr. Sub restaurant opposite the police office.
Police were watching three teens when suddenly the verbal altercation turned into one lad being punched in the face and having his ball cap taken. This victim then produced an axe handle from his back pack.
Police intervened quickly and all three combatants were arrested. Two of the boys were 17 and one was 19 years old. The original victim has been charged with carrying a concealed weapon, failing to comply with a police undertaking and two counts of breach of probation.
One other teen is charged with assault and the 19 year old has been charged with theft, possession of stolen property and breach of probation.
Early Thursday morning, May 21 at approximately 1:30 a.m., staff at the local McDonald’s restaurant notified Cobourg police of a vehicle in their drive thru area and that alcohol was being consumed.
Police located the vehicle on William Street and spoke with two men in car. The investigation resulted in two Colborne men being charged with an assortment of violations.
The 56 year old driver was charged with having no insurance and operating a motor vehicle with open liquor accessible. He was also given a roadside breath test and failed. His licence has been confiscated for three days.
His 45 year old passenger was charged with possession of marijuana and breach of a probation condition.
They were issued court documents at the scene for a future court appearance and a taxi was called to take them to a residence.
Cobourg Police investigated two motor vehicle collisions this past Tuesday, both resulting in charges and no injuries.
The first crash occurred at 2:24 p.m., on King Street West in the downtown area. A parked SUV on the south side pulled from the curb and was struck by an eastbound car which had the right of way. The collision resulted in the offending SUV being pushed into a third car which was parked in front of her original parking spot.
The 20 year old female driver of the SUV, a Hamilton Township resident, has been charged with making an unsafe start from a parked position. The car traveling straight through required a tow from the scene.
The second collision occurred at 7:00 p.m., at the intersection of University Avenue East and Walton Street. A car on Walton Street attempted to turn onto University Avenue and collided with car on University Avenue causing minor damage.
The 70 year old Cobourg female driving the turning car has been charged with failing to yield.
Sometime over the past long weekend, four school buses were damaged while parked in a lot on of Brock Road North. The buses were parked near the Columbus-McKinnon Ltd., property.
Vandals smashed windows and broke doors. The estimate of damage is approximately $4,000.00.
Cobourg Police investigated a two-vehicle collision on Saturday, May 16 at 12:34 p.m. The crash occurred when a northbound vehicle was struck by a van turning onto Burnham Street from Rayner Road.
The 18 year old female driver of the van from Loretto, Ontario, has been charged with failing to yield. The driver of the car she struck was taken to hospital with unknown injuries.
On Friday afternoon, May 15 at 1:50 p.m., two police officers traveling in an unmarked police vehicle, spotted a suspected drug dealer near the VIA station.
Within minutes, police observed a drug deal occur in the parking lot and the suspect was immediately arrested.
The accused, a 31 year old North York man, was found to have a total of 23 grams of crack cocaine on his person. Police also found almost $2,000.00 in cash in his pant pocket.
The accused has been charged with two counts of Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking and one charge of Proceeds of Crime (the cash).
As the result of King Street East and Rankin Boulevard residents complaining to police about high school student loitering and trespassing on their properties, Cobourg Police arrested a 14 year old male student on Thursday morning, May 14 at 11:50 a.m.
The accused had walked across a private lawn, which had been posted ‘Trespassers Will Be Prosecuted’ and police were present and witnessed the incident.
Further investigation revealed the student had just been suspended from school and that he was already on probation and a condition of his probation was that he not get suspended from school.
He had been charged with failing to comply with a probation order and engage in a prohibited activity on premises, contrary to the Trespass to Property Act.
The second 14 year old arrested was unrelated to the first incident but occurring within minutes of the first arrest.
At approximately noon, this accused was caught stealing a box of condoms at the Shopper’s Drug Mart. He was arrested and faces charges of theft, possession of stolen property and breach of an undertaking from a previous occurrence.
A 29 year old Port Hope woman has been arrested for impaired driving after she lost control of her car on Strathy Road and struck a sidewalk embankment and a road divider and pole.
The crash occurred early Friday morning, May 15 at 12:50 a.m. The driver was found impaired and after being arrested she was taken to the police office where she blew more than twice the legal limit.
Two passengers in her car were treated for minor injuries and her car was towed from the scene.
In recognition of the fifth anniversary of the death of Constable Chris Garrett (May 15, 2004), the Cobourg Police Service is holding a BBQ at the Chris Garrett Memorial Park on Birchwood Trail on Friday, May 15 between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm.

Sometime during the day on Tuesday, May 12, the staff at the Pet Valu store at Northumberland Mall allowed a customer to use their private washroom and discovered a short time later that the store money deposit was missing.
Apparently the money was accessible from the washroom area.
Police are interested in locating the customer who is described as a young female with short-dark hair and was wearing a white-hooded sweatshirt.
She also had a large pit bull dog with her. It is believed that she left the mall on foot.
A business on Division Street has recently been receiving counterfeit five dollar bills. Several of these bills have been passed and according to police they are very good quality.
Usually counterfeit bills are of a higher denomination, so the fives require more attention by store employees and the public.
If you suspect you might have received a counterfeit bill of any denomination, the police would like to be contacted so that the bills and their serials numbers can be recorded and tracked.
Sometime between Sunday evening, May 10 and Tuesday at noon, a business called WHATEVER at 501 Division Street was broken into.
Unknown person(s) smashed the glass in a rear door which allowed them entry and an exit from the business.
Various items were stolen including a silver 3.2 mega pixel Canon digital camera, a silver Samsung digital camera, a Sandisk MP3 player lime green in colour, a gas mask and an unknown quantity of PS2 games, DVDs, CDs and watches.
Thefts from unlocked vehicles are a huge draw on police resources and time.
It is almost becoming a nightly event and police need the publics help to catch the thieves. Locking your vehicle is the best thing but also reporting suspicious persons around parked vehicles is what police need.
Overnight on Sunday, May 10 or early Monday morning, vehicles were entered on Lakeview Court, Forth Street and Daintry Crescent. All the vehicles were unlocked.
Stolen items include loose change, a wallet and a cell phone.
The Cobourg Police Service would like to invite the public to attend at the police office during business hours to help celebrate police week, May 11 -17.

Late Thursday night, May 8, just before midnight, Cobourg Police were alerted by a resident in the D’Arcy Street – Nickerson Drive area, that three young persons were going through parked cars.
As police arrived in the area, the suspects fled on foot into the bushes and neighbouring yards. After a foot pursuit by police, one the teens was apprehended while his two accomplices managed to elude police.
A 17 year old Cobourg male was arrested in the area. He has been initially charged with trespassing at night, consuming liquor under age and breach of probation.
Several vehicles owners have told police that their unlocked vehicles sustained some minor interior damage and that loose change has been stolen.
The incidents are still under investigation. More arrests and charges are likely.
Cobourg Police investigated a two-vehicle collision at the corner of William and Heath Streets on Friday, May 8 at 7:22 p.m.
A pickup truck was stopped on Heath Street for the red light, when a southbound car on William Street attempted to turn right onto Heath Street when the driver lost control and struck the truck.
The 16 year old Baltimore female driving the car has been charged with making an unsafe turn. Her car required a tow from the scene.
There were no injuries and the pickup truck was able to be driven away.
Cobourg Police are investigating a break and enter at the Cobourg arena Pad 2. It was discovered Friday night, May 8 just before midnight.
Police found that someone had smashed the glass in a southeast door and made entry into the arena.
Once inside, the suspect(s) smashed the vending machine in the lobby and discharged a fire extinguisher spreading the white-powder contents of the extinguisher around.
The offender(s) then left the arena via the main doors and fled through the parking lot in a southwest direction.
Police were able to see footprints in the extinguisher powder and noted a DC logo on the bottom of one boot which was approximately size 12. Another footprint revealed either a POJO or MOJO logo and was approximately to be a size 8-9.
Cost of damage and cleaning is estimated at approximately $6,500.00
A lady shopping at Zeller’s on Tuesday, May 5 around 4:30 p.m. had her purse ripped out of her hand while she was shopping in the women’s area of the store.
The sixty seven year old Brighton woman had placed her purse on the seat portion of the cart and was holding the purse strap and handle of the cart when the theft occurred.
Three suspects were in the same area of the store as the victim when suddenly an unknown male and female approached her shopping cart and ripped the purse from her hand. All three suspects ran out the front door of the store and were last seen heading north.
The victim was not hurt. However her purse did contain a lot of personal documents, credit cards, cash, her cancer hospital cards and a number of keys.
All three suspects are 14–16 years old. One of the males is black and short. The female and other male are white, 5’– 5’5” tall and with slim builds. The female has blond hair in a pony tail and was wearing a light-coloured t-shirt. The white male was wearing a red hat with long-brown-curly hair coming out through the back of the hat. He also wore a light shirt.
Police are preparing to view store video tapes in hopes of capturing pictures of the offenders.
Cobourg Police are currently investigating two robberies involving two different businesses, on two consecutive nights.
The first occurred on Sunday night, May 3 at approximately 9:50 p.m., at the Pioneer Gas Bar at 500 Division Street. A lone unidentified female approached the gas bar kiosk. She quickly produced a knife from the front pocket of her hooded sweat shirt and demanded the money from the till. She left the kiosk quickly as another customer had entered the store area. The suspect was last seen running south towards Monroe Street.
She is described as being short, approximately 5’3”, weighting 140 -150 pounds and blond hair. She was wearing a black-ball cap with LA on it, a grey hoodie, black jeans and brown-running shoes.
The second robbery occurred the following night, Monday, May 4 at approximately 11:30 p.m., at The Hub Service Centre (formerly Bruce and Ricks) at 831 Division Street.
The lone bandit approached the store attendant and demanded everything in the till. The suspect also produced some type of edged weapon and pointed it at the attendant. A short conversation with the attendant resulted in the robber leaving the store with nothing and was last seen walking north along Division Street.
The suspect was described to police as being a male, non-white, 5’3” – 5’5” tall, 130 pounds with a small head covered by a black nylon. He was wearing a grey hoodie, black baseball cap with a grey brim, light-blue jeans and white running shoes. No estimate of age was given to police.
On Monday, May 4 at 5:34 p.m., a car was attempting to turn left onto Division Street from the roadway leading from the VIA station. The vehicle was struck by a southbound pickup truck on Division Street.
The driver of the turning car, an 18 year old Richmond Hill man, and a passenger in his car, were taken to Northumberland Hills Hospital by ambulance with unknown injuries.
He was also charged with making an unsafe turn. The driver of the pickup truck was not injured.
Both vehicles were blocking the southbound lanes on Division Street and required tows from the scene.
Early Sunday morning, May 3 at 5:16 a.m., someone attempted to break into Pharmacy 101 on Division Street. The suspect(s) jammed an unknown object, possibly a pry bar, into the metal glass frame at a large window on the north side of the business.
The outside pane of glass on the double-paned window was punctured and shattered. The glass was still in the frame.
All of this activity activated an audible alarm which may have frightened the suspect(s) who were gone before police arrived two minutes later.
There was no entry made into the pharmacy. A three foot square double pane of glass and some metal framing will have to be repaired and will cost approximately $500.00.
Overnight on Friday, May 1 or early Saturday morning, Cobourg Police responded to three reports involving mischief.
The first involved a Lake Street resident reporting that someone pushed over two large concrete benches which were on his front lawn. They were not damaged.
The second call was to a business on King Street West and appeared that someone had thrown an object through a window. The business was not entered.
Also Friday night, someone ransacked a vehicle parked on Henry Street. Nothing appears to have been stolen.
Cobourg Police are investigating the theft of a pickup truck from the lot at Bill Spencer Chevrolet Oldsmobile Ltd., on Elgin Street West.
The vehicle went missing sometime overnight on Thursday, April 30 or during the daytime on Friday, May 1. It was reported stolen to police around 8:00 p.m. on Friday.
The stolen vehicle is a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck with duel rear wheels, four doors and grey in colour. It had some yellow roof lights, chrome door handles and steel wheels.
The Cobourg Police Service is holding its annual auction this Saturday, May 9 at 2:00 p.m.
The usual assortment of found property, including bicycles as well as office furniture will be on the block.
The Cobourg Police Volunteers will be present and selling BBQ hamburgers and sausages. The event is held in the parking lot at the rear of the police station.
Cobourg Police Services arrested three suspects and seized hundreds of dollars of stolen property from five retail outlets on Sunday, April 26 after receiving assistance from a Cobourg person.
An alert citizen called Cobourg Police and reported a suspect stopping near his house, getting out and taping a set of licence plates onto his car and then driving off. The citizen gave police the plate number and it came back as stolen from Northumberland O.P.P. area. The car was described as a green Ford Taurus. Officers attended the area and were unable to locate the vehicle.
About an hour later, staff at Blockbuster Video on Elgin Street West reported a male shoplifting a number of DVDs and jumping into a get-away car. Staff and a witness got the last three numbers of the licence plate and the digits matched the stolen plates.
A short while later, police located the suspect vehicle in front of Walmart and arrested the two male occupants. A third suspect was caught a short distance away in the parking lot by another police officer. The car was full of groceries (mainly meat) from Metro and No Frills in Cobourg. Stolen property was also recovered from Walmart, Blockbuster and Dollarama.
Three adult males face numerous charges of theft, possession of stolen property and bail violations.
The Canadian Cancer Society and Cobourg Police Service have been notified by residents of the community that a female was going door to door collecting funds for Relay For Life, using materials that did not look like official Relay materials. Upon checking its registrations, the Society was able to confirm that the individual was not registered as a Relay For Life participant and Cobourg Police are investigating. The Cobourg Police would like to remind residents to be cautious when approached by anyone they do not know collecting pledges for any charity. Make sure the canvasser has proper visible identification and a legitimate pledge form. As this is Daffodil Month, one of the Canadian Cancer Society’s most important fundraising initiatives, the Society does have volunteer canvassers going door to door on behalf of the Canadian Cancer Society. Canvassers will be wearing a name tag and carrying a book that is printed with the daffodil, and offer an official tax receipt immediately after every donation that features the Society name, charitable tax receipt number and the logo. Relay For Life participants will carry an official pledge envelope and tax receipts will be issued following the June 5 event. Residents are advised to contact their local Society office at 1-800-463-0432 and ask for Anita Record or contact police if a canvasser at their door does not carry Canadian Cancer Society materials and identification.
