Cobourg Police are investigating the theft of a purse from the outdoor rink on Albert Street. The theft occurred during the afternoon on Monday, February 23.
The purse had been left in a child’s wagon parked outside near the ice surface. It was covered with other items.
The purse included the woman’s personal identification cards, some cash and medications.
Cobourg Police investigated a single-car crash on Sunday, February 22 at 7:45 p.m., involving a car loosing control and striking a cement bridge wall.
The vehicle had been eastbound on Elgin Street and upon entering the intersection at Ontario Street, veered to the left crossing the westbound lanes and ran into the cement bridge wall on the northeast corner of the intersection.
The 33 year old Cobourg woman driving the car was taken to Northumberland Hills hospital with unknown injuries.
Police suspect the collision made have occurred due to some medical condition affecting the driver.
No other vehicles were involved. Her car was towed from the scene.
On Saturday, February 21 around 9:15 p.m., a female employee at a business in Northumberland Mall, noticed that her car keys were missing from her handbag at work.
She checked the parking lot at the mall and discovered that her car had also been stolen.
Cobourg Police became involved and acting on information provided by the car owner, checked a Cobourg address and found the car parked in the driveway. The victim told police that she had suspected a male co-worker had stole the car.
A sixteen year old Cobourg teen has been charged with theft and possession of stolen property over $5,000.00.
A number of personal items, which were in the car at the time it was stolen, have not been recovered.
On Thursday morning, February 19 just after midnight, Cobourg Police were sent to the McDonald’s restaurant on William Street after receiving information that an impaired driver was going through their drive-thru lane.
Police arrived quickly and arrested a 50 year old Grafton man and charged him with impaired driving. He subsequently blew more than two and one half times the legal alcohol limit on the police intoxilyzer.
A ten year relationship between a Cobourg man and woman became violent at their home on Wednesday evening, February 18 around 6:20 p.m.
The male became upset over a telephone conversation his female partner was having with another family member. A verbal argument started first between the couple and after a few minutes, when the female attempted to leave, the male became very physical towards her.
The accused male grabbed her hair and pulled her to the ground where he began kicking and punching the victim. When a neighbour appeared, the accused threatened him with death if he called police.
The victim did manage to get away from the accused. The accused, realizing that police were probably on the way, fled in the victim’s car. He was located a short time later on King Street and arrested.
The 46 year old Cobourg man is being held in custody and will appear in court on Monday, February 23 on video. He is facing charges of assault and uttering a death threat, three Highway Traffic Act charges including driving while under suspension and four counts of breach of probation.
A RIDE check on Monday, February 16 around 7:00 p.m., on Elgin Street, has nabbed a Hamilton Township man for his second impaired charge in 8 days.
Last Monday, February 9, he was stopped for speeding and charged with driving with over .08 mg. per 100 ml. of blood and again this week he was apprehended at a RIDE program.
The 22 year old man has been charged with driving with over .08, driving with no licence and while under suspension.
His latest court date of February 25 will correspond with the first court date from the previous charges.
Cobourg Police investigated a collision on Sunday, February 15 at 12:15 p.m., on Chipping Park Boulevard.
The collision involved a Chipping Park Boulevard resident backing out of his driveway and striking a parked car on the street.
He has been charged with starting from a stopped position, not in safety. There was damage to the parked car, however both vehicles were drivable. No one was injured.
On Friday afternoon and early evening, February 13, Cobourg Police investigated two separate collisions in town.
The first involved two Armour Court residents who came into collision when one was backing out of her driveway and failed to see her neighbour passing by on the street.
The backing car subsequently struck a van causing minor damage. The driver, an 82 year old woman, has been charged with failing to yield from a private driveway. There were no injuries and no tows required.
Later in the afternoon, police again investigated a crash which occurred on James Street West.
In this incident, two motorists were backing from private driveways nearly opposite each other, when they collided on the street.
One of the motorists, a 36 year old Cobourg woman, has been charged with failing to yield from a private driveway. Similarly, no injuries were reported and both vehicles were drivable.
Cobourg Police were called to a local high school on Thursday, February 12 in the morning as the result of a complaint of assault.
The investigation revealed that one male student had kicked another male student in the groin causing considerable pain. The victim was unable to get up off the floor for 10 -15 minutes due to his injury.
According to the accused, the assault was provoked by an alleged earlier event near the student’s lockers.
The assault was witnessed by several other students.
The accused, a 17 year old Roseneath area teen, has been charged with assault and willful non-compliance of a previous court order.
On Wednesday evening, February 11 at around 6:00 p.m., an off-duty Cobourg Police officer was at the Canadian Tire store when he was approached by staff and told about a group of men that had just purchased some high-end electronics with a suspect credit card.
The credit card did approve and they successful purchased a 40 inch television and a surround-sound entertainment system, totaling over $1,900.00.
Staff also told the officer that they overheard the men talking about going to Wal-Mart next to make more purchases.
The off-duty officer called into the police dispatch and then maintained telephone communication with on-duty officers to co-ordinate and effect the arrest of the four suspects outside Wal-Mart a short time later.
Four males in their twenties were arrested. Three reside in Belleville and one in Kingston. They are facing charges of fraud, possession and use of a fraudulent credit card, possession of property obtained by crime and one accused is also charged with breach of probation.
The four men were subsequently released and will appear in Cobourg court on Wednesday, March 25 at 9:30 a.m.
Cobourg Police investigated a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Elgin Street West and Burnham Street on Tuesday, February 10 at 3:44 p.m.
Both vehicles were traveling in opposite directions on Burnham Street and entered the intersection at the same time. The investigation revealed that one car turned in front of the other while both had green lights.
The 81 year old Cobourg female driving the turning car has been charged with careless driving.
The driver of the second car and her young son were taken to hospital by ambulance with minor injuries and as a precaution.
Both vehicles received significant damage and required tows from the scene.
On Monday evening, February 9 at approximately 7:20 p.m., Cobourg Police stopped a vehicle for speeding which resulted in the driver being arrested for excessive alcohol consumption and possession of suspect cocaine.
The 22 year old Hamilton Township man was found to show signs of impairment and he subsequently failed a roadside breath test. He was arrested and when searched, police found a quantity of suspected cocaine.
The accused has been charged with driving a motor vehicle with more that 80 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood and possession of a controlled substance.
He was later released on a Promise to Appear document for Cobourg court on Wednesday, February 25 at 9:30 a.m.
On Saturday, February 7 at approximately 3:00 p.m., Cobourg Police discovered an abandon Chevrolet pickup truck on the lot of Northumberland Mall, near the Staples Business Depot. The driver’s door was ajar and the ignition was intact. Further investigation revealed that the licence plates had been reported stolen from Durham Region a few days prior and when police checked the serial number of the truck, they learned that the truck had been stolen from a business location in Hamilton Township approximately two and one half weeks ago.
The truck was subsequently towed to the O.P.P. detachment in Cobourg for follow-up investigation. The original plates which were on the truck at the time it was stolen are still missing.
A two-vehicle collision occurred at the intersection of D’Arcy Street and King Street East on Friday, February 6 at 11:15 a.m.
A car had stopped on D’Arcy Street southbound at King Street intending to turn left once the light turned green. However, a second southbound vehicle crashed into the rear of the stopped car.
No one was hurt in the collision however the driver of the trailing vehicle, a 58 year old Cobourg man, has been charged with careless driving. His vehicle required a tow from the scene but the lead car was able to be driven away.
A second collision was investigated by police on Saturday, February 7 at 6:04 a.m., on Division Street.
A southbound vehicle was slowing for the lights at King Street, when they were struck from behind by another southbound car.
A passenger in the lead vehicle, a 12 year old girl, was taken to hospital by ambulance. She was complaining of a sore neck.
The 52 year old Cobourg area woman driving the second vehicle has been charged with following too closely. Both vehicles involved in this collision were able to be driven from the scene.
An existing by-law within the Town of Cobourg is being enforced and vehicles are being towed and owners fined.
Parking motor vehicles in Cobourg is restricted between November 1st and March 31st each year to facilitate the removal of snow. Designated streets have a parking prohibition within these dates, specifically between 2:00 a.m. – 7:00 a.m.
Police and Town By-law officials have the authority to have a vehicle towed and issue a $35.00 fine. The vehicle owner is also responsible for the cost of the tow. Police will not attempt to contact vehicle owners before towing.
All streets in Cobourg have a 24 hour parking maximum, but vehicle owners should check the list of designated streets to see if the early morning parking prohibition applies to them.
The list of designated streets is available on the town’s website or by contacting the Public Works Department.
Sometime overnight on Sunday, January 18 or early Monday morning, January 19, someone climbed onto the roof of the Pentel Plaza on William Street and cut a hole allowing them entry into The Cash Store.
Once inside, the suspect(s) cut electrical wires thereby dismantling motion sensors.
The business was ransacked and police were told that an $80.00 cash float and a HP computer monitor were stolen. It is also known that the suspect(s) left via the rear door.
Police have collected some physical evidence from the scene and the investigation is on-going.
Cobourg Police are investigating a pedestrian-vehicle collision which occurred on Monday, February 2 at approximately 2:30 p.m. The incident occurred at the intersection of King Street West and George Street.
The pedestrian, a 52 year old Port Hope man, was crossing King Street northbound when a southbound vehicle attempted to turn left onto King Street struck the pedestrian.
He was taken to Northumberland Hills Hospital by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the vehicle, a 60 year old Cobourg woman, was not injured. Charges are pending against her.

On Monday, February 2 at 2:30 p.m., Cobourg Police investigated a collision between two Hondas, both driven by female Cobourg residents.
The collision occurred at the intersection of King Street West and Tremaine Street.
The first car was on Tremaine Street stopped at the stop sign. The second car was westbound on King Street and in the process of turning left onto Tremaine Street, struck the stopped car.
The 71 year old driver of the car turning has been charged with making an unsafe turn. Her car had to be towed from the scene.
The car which was struck was able to be driven away. There were no injuries.
Cobourg Police were kept busy over the past weekend with calls concerning unlocked vehicles being entered and items stolen.
Victim’s vehicles were parked on Monroe and Orange Streets in the town’s core but the majority of calls came from the town’s west end, specifically Harden, Hayden, Sandmere, Spragge and Murray Crescents and Burwash Street.
Stolen items include two pairs of binoculars, a Swiss army knife, Sirius satellite radio receiver, GPS, loose change and some household items.
Police did follow some tracks in the snow as the suspects when from vehicle to vehicle but no arrests were made.
