A female patient at Northumberland Hills Hospital decided to leave the facility by way of a rear door with a nurse in pursuit.
The patient got into a Chevrolet Yukon vehicle and left the hospital traveling south on Burnham Street.
A Cobourg Police officer spotted the vehicle heading south on William Street and followed her until other officers arrived and unsuccessfully attempted to box the vehicle in to get it stopped. The Yukon traveled through town before turning down Willmott Street where it eventually stopped at the bottom of Willmott Street near the lake.
Officers approached the vehicle but the driver would not get out. Police had to break the side window to access the ignition and shut the vehicle off.
The 46 year old female driver from Sudbury, was returned to the hospital to continue her mental health assessment. No charges have been laid.
Cobourg Police arrested a 25 year old man on Saturday, November 22. He is facing a number of sexual-related charges after the father of two young girls reported to police that they have been sexually assaulted over the past two years.
The complainant shares custody to the two young victims with his ex-wife who has a live-in boyfriend. This boyfriend is alleged to have been sexually assaulting the girls as he is often was alone with the victims in the morning when their mother goes to work.
According to the investigation, the accused was suspected of this criminal activity about one year ago and threaten to beat and kill the mother if she allowed police to investigate.
The two girls are 8 and 10 years old. The accused who lives in Hamilton Township, has been arrested and held in custody for a Show Cause Hearing on Monday, November 24. He is facing charges of Uttering Threats, and two counts of each charge of Sexual Assault, Sexual Interference, Sexual Exploitation and Invitation to Sexual Touching.
On Friday night, November 21 at approximately 11:20 p.m., Cobourg Police were notified by Port Hope Police that a green Dodge Caravan had just been stolen from Port Hope.
A few minutes later, a Cobourg Police officer spotted the stolen van exit from Highway 401 and head south on Burnham Street. The officer followed the van into the Wal-Mart parking lot and confirmed that he had the correct vehicle after getting close enough to see the licence plate.
Once in the Wal-Mart lot, the sole male driver of the stolen van started to drive very fast between parked cars and as soon as the officer activated the police car lights and siren, he sped out onto Strathy Road southbound.
The stolen van continued southbound and sped through a red light at Elgin Street and continued into the Zellers parking lot. According to police the van reached speeds of almost 100 km/h. It exited the Zellers lot, missing a Cobourg Police car by only a few inches. It crossed Elgin Street again and traveled northbound up Courthouse Road where it stopped and the driver bolted on foot.
A foot pursuit ensued with police officers and he was arrested a short time later near the Boston Pizza restaurant.
The accused man is 41 years old and from Etobicoke. He has been held in custody of a Show Cause Hearing in Cobourg Court on Monday, November 24. He is facing charges of Possession of Stolen Property, Dangerous Driving, Flight from Police, two counts of Breach of Probation and one count of Possession of Break-In Tools.
A subsequent search of the accused and the stolen van revealed a compact flashlight, black gloves, and numerous small tools. The door of the stolen van had been pried to open.
On Friday morning, November 21 at around 9:00 a.m., a car failed to stop for a stop sign at the intersection of James Street East and Henry Street and struck a pickup truck traveling through the intersection.
The car which failed to stop was southbound on Henry Street and failed to stop and stuck the eastbound pickup truck.
There were no injuries; however both vehicles required tows from the scene.
The 68 year old Cobourg woman driving the car has been charged with Failing to Yield to Traffic on a Through Roadway.
Upon receiving information that an impaired driver was on King Street, Cobourg Police located the described pickup truck parked on the north side of King Street in the downtown area.
The driver was behind the wheel of his truck, which was not running. Police approached the driver’s door and upon speaking to the driver, quickly realized that he was very intoxicated. The driver’s first words to the officers were ‘hey buddy’ when he was asked to identify himself.
He was arrested and removed from the vehicle. A witness on the sidewalk told police that the accused had struck the vehicle in front of his while attempting to park. There was minor damage to the other vehicle.
The accused was taken to the police office where he refused to supply police with a sample of his breath.
The 63 year old Cobourg man has been charged with Impaired Operation and Fail to Supply a Breath Sample.
cobourg police to implement auxiliary officer program
In a continued effort to enhance community-based policing in Cobourg, the police service is implementing an auxiliary officer program in the new year.
Selected candidates will be trained and become competent in most of the aspects expected of regular police officers including use of force, defensive tactics, powers of arrest, the Criminal Code and other statutes.
Successful auxiliary officers will complement existing police officers and be involved in R.I.D.E. programs, search and rescue, general patrol, community- based policing, emergency and disaster response, bike, ATV patrol and canvassing.
Requirements to apply for an auxiliary officer are posted in detail on the Cobourg Police web site, www.cobourgpolice.com.
It is important to note that becoming an auxiliary officer is not a means of joining the Cobourg Police Service.
On Wednesday, November 19 around 2:40 p.m., school staff at the CDCI East located a quantity of marijuana on a student in the yard near the buses.
Police were called and a 17 year old male student, who resides in Hamilton Township, was arrested and has been charged with Possession of A Controlled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking.
Police seized 3.5 grams of marijuana and a set of small scales from the accused.
He has been held in custody pending a Show Cause Hearing in Cobourg Court on Thursday, November 20. He is currently before the courts on other non-related criminal charges.
Sometime during the evening shift on Wednesday night, November 19 or very early Thursday morning, the driver’s side window of a vehicle was smashed. The vehicle was parked at a Ball Street business.
The owner of the vehicle was informed by a co-worker around 2:00 a.m. that the vehicle had been broken into.
The thief stole the owner’s wallet, which was hidden from view in the centre console. The wallet contained a driver’s licence, personal cards and a small amount of change.
Police followed footprints in the snow to an area around the arena, but heavy snow had begun to cover the tracks.
Extremely slippery road conditions caused a chain-reaction crash on Elgin Street West on Wednesday evening, November 19 at 6:50 p.m.
Three cars and two pickup trucks were all westbound. The lead car had stopped to allow another unrelated vehicle to turn left in front of them, which resulted in the four following vehicles to rear-end each other.
No one was injured in the collisions and everyone was able to drive their vehicles away from the scene.
On Friday, November 14 around 4:00 p.m., a 16 year Hamilton Township female was approached on Veronica Street by two men in a car.
She was walking westbound when an approaching car slowed beside her and the two male occupants in the front seat asked her ‘where she was going?’, ‘do you live around here’ and ‘would you like a ride’?
The girl said she was fine and continued to walk away. The car then parked for a few seconds near her and then left the area.
The occupants of the car are described as being in their 30’s and of East Indian decent. They both had short dark hair.
Their car is described as a silver 4-door model, make unknown, but with all windows heavily tinted.
The occupants never got out of their vehicle; however the young girl was concerned for her safety.
Two Brampton area men were arrested by Cobourg Police on Tuesday, November 18 around noon at Wal-Mart.
The accused men had been observed by store staff taking a price tag off of one pair of boots and putting it on another pair. They switched a $180.00 price tag with one of a value of $79.99 and then attended at the cashier and paid the lesser amount.
Police have charged the two men, aged 19 and 31 years old with Fraud Under $5,000.00 and Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000.00.
They were released on Appearance Notices for a future Cobourg court date.
