Sometime overnight on Thursday, August 28 or early Friday morning, August 29, the building at the Y pool on Charles Street was entered and items stolen.
Stolen items included $162.00 in cash, an HP Laptop computer and an American Eagle duffle bag. The computer and duffle bag belonged to employees of the pool.
There was no forced entry to the building. Perhaps a door leading to the pool area had not been closed properly.
Cobourg Police were called to a James Street East residence on Thursday evening, August 28 at 11:20 p.m.
Upon their arrival, police observed the accused man standing in the front yard of a residence occupied by a person with whom he was not to have any communication with, as per a recent undertaking he signed. The accused was intoxicated.
He was yelling towards the residence for the person to come out and talk to him. He was told by a witness that the person was not home and for him to leave. The accuser’s parent were also present but unable to control their son or remove him from the scene.
Police informed the man he was under arrest and attempted to place handcuffs on him. He became extremely agitated and resisted. Police forcibly took the man to the ground as he continued to struggle and attempt to get to his feet. The accused kicked one of the officers on the right side of his torso, however the officer did not receive any injuries as a result of the assault.
The accused, as 21 year old Cobourg man, has been charged with Breach of an Undertaking and Assault Police. He has been held in custody pending a Show Cause Hearing.
A 30 year old Port Hope woman, on a work break, observed a man open her parked vehicle and steal items.
The incident occurred behind a Strathy Road business as the victim was sitting on a picnic table on Wednesday, August 27 at approximately 7:40 p.m.
The suspect opened the door to her vehicle and removed an old purse, a small container of coins and a quantity of cigarettes.
The victim started to chase the suspect who discarded the purse but managed to get away. A second male was also seen watching from nearby bushes and apparently accompanying the fleeing man.
The man who entered the vehicle is described as being white, 5’10” tall, with dark-brown hair to his shoulders and somewhat wavy. He was wearing a black shirt with the word ‘HELL’ on the back of it.
His accomplice is about the same height, with blonde hair and wearing a beige baseball cap and green and white striped shirt.
Cobourg Police have arrested a 30 year old Port Hope man for stealing a bottle of cologne from Wal-Mart.
The incident was observed by store security staff on Wednesday, August 27 around 2:30 p.m.
The accused had picked up a bottle of Giorgio Armani cologne and after removing it from the packaging, placed the bottle in his pocket. He did attend at the cashier and pay for another item, but never offered to pay for the cologne.
Upon his departure from the store, he was detained by store staff and held for police. He was charged by police and also served a trespass notice by the store.
Cobourg Police are searching for a man who exposed himself to a group of teenage girls on the beach. It occurred around 7:30 p.m., Monday, August 25.
The suspect is described as a skinny-white male, well tanned, in his late 20’s to early 40’s, approximately 5’6” tall, with sunken cheeks. He was wearing a grey Superbowl baseball cap with a red peak, sunglasses, faded-blue jeans, black-spandex shorts under the jeans and a long-sleeved, dark-brown T-shirt with a large-framed V on the chest.
On Monday, August 25 Cobourg Police were called to Victoria Place Plaza concerning graffiti spray painted around the plaza overnight.
The Dollarama store received most of the paint, specifically on the large overhead sign, windows and doors. The only decipherable words were “OK”, “AWAKE” and “WAKE UP”.
Paint was also sprayed on a pay telephone booth and the plaza tower.
Cobourg Police are investigating two more reports of bicycles being stolen.
The first report involved a mountain bike stolen from a Carroll Crescent driveway sometime Sunday evening. The bike is a 2008 men’s Norco Plateau, green in colour with a 16” frame and 21 speeds. It is valued at $400.00.
The second bicycle reported stolen was from the library on Monday over the lunch hour. It was an older Raleigh bike, olive in colour and it had been left locked.
Cobourg Police are investigating the theft of money and cheques from church givings over the weekend from St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church.
Someone entered the perish centre of St. Michael’s Church on Sunday morning, sometime after the 9:00 a.m. service and stole the money.
The collections from the Saturday night and the Sunday morning 9:00 a.m., services had been kept in money bags in the adjacent perish centre pending the termination of the 11:00 a.m.service at which time all would have been deposited.
Police are asking anyone who attended either the Saturday night or Sunday morning early service and gave a cheque to immediately notify their respective banks and put a stop payment on their cheque.
Also, if anyone has a cheque cashed, they need to notify Cobourg Police immediately. The investigating officer is Constable Greg McCurdy.
On Saturday night, August 23 at 8:10 p.m., Cobourg Police became involved with a man riding his bicycle on Swayne Street. As a result a quantity of crack cocaine was located in his possession.
Further investigation revealed the accused had cocaine in his shorts pocket and socks. A total of 2.7 grams of cocaine was seized by police.
The accused man, aged 49 of no fixed address, has been charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking and two counts of failing to Comply with a Probation Order.
He was on probation for similar charges and is well known by police.
Early Saturday morning at approximately 2:45 a.m., a George Street apartment resident was suddenly woken up when a brick was thrown through a window on the east side of the apartment.
The complainant got up and observed three or four males dressed in dark clothing running up George Street. Police were notified approximately 20 minutes later and conducted a patrol of the area with negative results.
Also over the weekend, three bicycle thefts were reported to Cobourg Police.
On Friday, August 22 during the afternoon, a man’s Iron Horse Maverick 24-speed bicycle, dark grey in colour was stolen from a residence on Sinclair Street. The bike is valued at $600.00.
On Sunday, August 24, a bike was reported stolen from a Curtis Crescent residence, within the past week. It is described as a Scrambler 21 speed-mountain bike, yellow in colour and is worth $100.00.
The third report was also on Sunday and involved the theft of a Miatta 12 speed-specialty bicycle stolen from a Spencer Street residence. This bike is red in colour with special handle bars. It is valued at $1,500.00
Two more reports of gasoline thefts were reported to Cobourg Police. On Friday, August 22 at approximately 3:10 p.m., a female driving a grey Oldsmobile drove away from the pumps at the Ultramar Gas station on Division Street without paying for $40.00 worth of gas.
Several hours later around 6:00 p.m., also at the Ultramar Gas station, a man driving a red van filled his vehicle with $143.00 worth of gas and drove off without paying.
Street. Two cars were southbound when the lead vehicle stopped to make a left A two-car collision occurred Friday afternoon, August 22 at 3:05 p.m., on D’Arcy turn into a private driveway; however the trailing car did not stop in time and struck the turning car.
A 73 year old Cobourg woman has been charged with Following Too Closely. Both cars were driven from the scene. The man in the car which was struck complained of a sore back but did not require an ambulance.
Over the past weekend, Cobourg Police have received six calls about damage and thefts from vehicles around town. Three complaints involved vehicles being entered and items stolen. Two of vehicles were unlocked. The vehicles were parked on Cornell Crescent, Chipping Park Boulevard and Durham Street.
Stolen items include a cell phone, stereo faceplate, a blackberry, a Garmin ‘Nevi” GPS and numerous CD’s and DVD’s.
A car parked in a residential driveway on Frei Street was keyed. A vehicle parked at a King Street East restaurant had its windshield smashed by a baseball bat and a SUV parked on Sutherland Crescent received some minor damage.
On Friday morning, August 22 just after 3:00 a.m., Cobourg Police received a call about a man on a mission to do harm to himself. A vehicle description and name were supplied to police and that he may be headed for the train tracks near D’Arcy Street.
Police located the suspect at the tracks off D’Arcy Street standing outside of his vehicle. Upon seeing the police, he got into his car and proceeded northbound at a high rate of speed.
He suddenly pulled into a parking lot on the east side of D’Arcy Street south of Elgin Street and came to a stop. A Cobourg police officer pulled in behind the suspect who got out of his vehicle with a handgun pointed at his own head.
Officers present could hear the man asking for police to shoot him. He also had a second handgun in his other hand. Police immediately issued continual police challenges to him instructing him to drop the guns. He dropped the first gun to the ground but then put the second gun to his head. Finally he dropped the second gun and pulled a third gun from his waistband and held it to his head. Police continued to tell him to drop the gun. Then he started to walk towards one of the officers and the repeated commands from police finally worked and he dropped the third gun to the ground and went to his knees.
Police approached him at this point and made the arrest.
Officers found a fourth handgun on the back seat of his car. All the handguns were replicas but were in fact functioning pellet pistols. They are true copies and impossible to distinguish from the real thing.
Officers on scene showed tremendous courage and good judgment ending this showdown in a peaceful and safe manner.
The suspect, a 26 year old Cobourg area man, is in custody and has been taken for a mental assessment. Charges are pending.
Sometime over the past weekend, the four tires and rims were stolen off a vehicle parked behind a Strathy Road business.
The owner of the vehicle informed police that he discovered the theft Monday morning when he found his car sitting on four cement blocks and the wheels were missing.
The rear rims were ‘Weld Drag Lite Series 90’ and valued at $200.00 each. The front tires were regular stock and valued at $100.00 each.
Cobourg Police investigated an incident where a pedestrian was struck by a pickup truck which was leaving the Kraft plant and attempting to turn south onto William Street. This occurred on Monday, August 18 at 7:00 a.m.
The pedestrian was a 76 year old Cobourg man who was transported to Northumberland Hills Hospital with unknown injuries.
The 42 year old Cobourg woman driving the truck has been charged with Failing To Yield to a Pedestrian.
Just after midnight on Monday, August 18, a Cobourg man reported to Cobourg Police that someone stole his cell phone and wallet from his attaché case while he was on the patio of a local restaurant.
The victim told police that several young males were present on the patio and had he had overheard them comment on the case. These males are probable suspects however their identities are unknown.
Shortly after the theft, two credit cards were used at two other businesses in town.
An unmarked Cobourg Police car was involved in a rear-end collision on Friday night, August 15 at 11:15 p.m.
The police vehicle had been northbound on Division Street and was stopped and intending to turn left into the VIA station, when another northbound car failed to stop in time behind the cruiser and struck it.
Damage was minor and both vehicles were driven from the scene. There were two officers in the police car and they both attended Northumberland Hills Hospital, on their own, with minor injuries.
The driver of the car which rear-ended the cruiser, was not hurt. She was an 18 year old female from Cobourg has been charged with Following Too Closely.
Cobourg Police investigated a two-vehicle collision on Tuesday morning, August 12 at 6:30 a.m. The collision occurred on Elgin Street West.
A GMC street sweeper, belonging to the Town of Cobourg, was eastbound in the curb lane when a pickup truck approached from the rear and struck the sweeper.
The 42 year old Cobourg area man driving the truck told police that his vision was blinded by the sun.
Both drivers were taken to Northumberland Hills Hospital by ambulance suffering from minor injuries.
The pickup truck and sweeper were both towed from the scene and no charges were laid.
Cobourg Police have charged a 30 year man with seven criminal charges following an incident which occurred Monday evening, August 11 at approximately 7:40 p.m.
The victim reports that he left a store at the Pentel Plaza and was approached by the accused who pulled out a knife and told the victim to give him all of his money. The victim gave him $20.00 and the accused continued to threaten the victim by telling him that he would rob his house because he knew where he lived, that he nothing to lose as he lives on the street and also that he would poke holes in the victim (with the knife) and throw him over the bridge (into Cobourg creek).
The victim then ran from the scene to his residence which was nearby and called police. It is believed the accused and victim knew each other.
About 30 minutes later, police spotted the accused walking along James Street East. Police arrested the accused at gun point. He was compliant and laid face down on the street while police secured and searched him.
A knife was found in the accuser’s front right pocket as well as $20.00.
The accused, of no fixed address, has been held in police custody pending a Show Cause Hearing in Cobourg Court on Tuesday, August 12 at 1:30 p.m. He faces charges of Robbery, Uttering Threats of Death, Possession of Stolen Property, and four weapon-related charges.
Cobourg Police are investigating the break, enter and theft of a Division Street apartment sometime overnight on Wednesday, August 6 or early on Thursday, August 7.
There were no signs of forced entry, however someone gained entry to the apartment and stole $500.00 cash.
The money had been left on a coffee table and in a box kept in her nightstand.
The 23 year old female victim had been told that new locks were installed in her apartment prior to her moving in recently.
There was nothing suitable for fingerprinting and police have no suspects.
With the assistance of a local restaurant staff and the quick response of Cobourg Police, an Impaired Driver was stopped in Cobourg’s west end.
The call to police was received just after 1:00 a.m., on Thursday, August 7 and officers located the vehicle in the Victoria Place Plaza.
The driver, a 54 year old Cobourg man, was arrested for Impaired Driving. When he was searched after the arrest, police found a small quantity of marijuana in his shirt pocket.
The subsequent breath test revealed results twice the legal limit. The accused will appear in Cobourg Court at a later date on charges of Impaired Driving. Operating a Motor Vehicle with Over .08 and Possession of a Controlled Substance.
On Tuesday August 5, 2008, at approximately 1:20 P.M., a suspect attempted to steal a quantity of items from the Wal-Mart Store at 75 Strathy Road in the Town of Cobourg.
When the loss prevention officer attempted to apprehend the suspect, he broke free and fled in a 1991 Black Oldsmobile. There was a female waiting in this vehicle.
This vehicle was bearing Ontario licence BCLT 119. The vehicle had been reported stolen to the West Parry Sound OPP on August 3.
It is also believed that the same suspect was in Wal-Mart on Monday August 4 and possibly stole a “Coleman” family sized tent. The tent may be light blue and white in colour.
The Cobourg Police Service is asking residents of the Town and surrounding townships to be aware of strangers that may be camped out on their property.

On Tuesday, August 5 at approximately 9:45 p.m., Cobourg Police received information that someone was inside the former Sidbrook Private Hospital on King Street East.
This building has been vacant for several years and despite attempts by the owner to secure the structure, police found four teenage boys on the third floor.
It is believed that the trespassers gained entry through a door off a second floor exterior fire escape.
Two boys from Hamilton Township and two from Cobourg were removed from the building and charged with Trespassing. The tickets each carry a $65.00 fine.
The damp weather may have been responsible for a relatively quiet long weekend for Cobourg Police, however officers did respond to five complaints about noise.
Most of the incidents were associated to noisy and often late night residential parties, both inside and outside of the home.
Officers attended in all cases and the noisy gathering was stopped or taken inside. No charges or arrests were made.
The noise by-law in Cobourg requires persons to stop noisy parties and gatherings by 11:00 p.m. If police attend a call, the first time the offender(s) are usually given a copy of the noise by-law, with a warning that a repeat complaint will likely result in a charge.
A two-car collision occurred on Elgin Street at 10:47 a.m., on Thursday, July 31.
A car was exiting the Y driveway and attempting to turn left onto Elgin Street. The driver did not see an eastbound car on Elgin Street as his view may have been partially obstructed by another eastbound vehicle which was turning into the Y.
A 29 year old Cobourg man has been charged with Failing To Yield To Traffic On A Through Highway and was given a ticket at the scene.
The car which was struck on Elgin Street, required a tow from the scene. The driver of that vehicle also was seen by ambulance personnel, at the scene, for a sore elbow.
