Cobourg Police have been busy so far this long weekend with the usual assortment of calls for service.
On Sunday, June 29, there were four incidents of alcohol in the park and beach area and charges were laid. The zero tolerance for alcohol related incidents is continuing.
There have been several reports of lost personal items including purses and cell phones.
One three year old child was reported missing, but after a few moments she was located safe and sound by one of the police officers.
There have been a couple reports of fights occurring in and around Victoria Park and beach, however they have been over by the time police arrived.
On Saturday, June 28, Cobourg Police closed the Legion Beer tent at the Waterfront Festival at 8:34 p.m., due to major concerns for personal safety of the public and police officers.
Several large fights were underway both inside and outside the tent involving 30-40 combatants. Twelve police officers attended the scene and at least two officers were assaulted.
The tent will be allowed to re-open on Sunday; however several very strict conditions have been put in place by police and the Alcohol and Gaming Commission. Any further breaches of any one condition will result in the permanent closure of the beer tent for the remainder of the Waterfront Festival.
On Saturday, June 28 at approximately 3:40 p.m., Cobourg Police received a call about an impaired driver in the area of Wal-Mart. Police located the suspect car traveling on Strathy Road and it was stopped.
The driver, who was alone, exited his car and police immediately realized the man was intoxicated. He was arrested and a search of his van revealed an empty bottle of Vodka.
The accused was taken back to the police office where he became extreme erratic. He swore profusely and became physically defiance with police so much so that he needed to be tasered so police could take control of him. He had also taken off his shirt and was attempting to strangle himself.
He was subsequently taken to the Northumberland Hills Hospital for treatment before returning to the police cells. He is being held in custody pending a Show Cause Hearing in Cobourg court on Wednesday, July 2 at 1:30 p.m.
The accused is well known to police and is currently on probation and two driving disqualifications. He is facing one charge of Impaired Driving, two charges of Driving While Disqualified and nine charges of Failing To Comply with Probation Orders.
A 62 year old Cobourg man has been charged with Making a Turn Not in Safety, after his car was struck in the intersection of University Avenue and George Street.
The accused had been northbound on George Street and while attempting to turn left onto University Avenue, he was struck by a southbound car on George Street.
The collision occurred at 9:20 a.m., on Saturday, June 28. Both vehicles needed to be towed from the scene. There were no injuries.
On Friday evening at 9:15 p.m., Cobourg Police approached a man walking in the area of the entrance to Victoria Park trailer park. He was swearing.
Police started to ask the male questions and quickly determined that he had been drinking and that he was also bound by a probation order which included a clause prohibiting the consumption of alcohol.
As police attempted to arrest the man and take physical control of him, he ran from the officers. After a brief foot pursuit, he was apprehended and arrested for escaping lawful custody.
The accused continued to be belligerent with both officers and exhibited assaultive behavior, kicking and flailing about in an attempt to avoid being handcuffed. He continued to resist the attempts of the officers to contain him and both officers were hurt. They did not require medical attention, but both received abrasions on their arms, hands, and legs and one officer is suffering from a sore back.
The 20 year old Cobourg man is presently in police custody. He has been charged with two counts of Assault with Intent to Resist Arrest, two counts of Fail To Comply with Probation Orders and one count of Escape Lawful Custody.
Cobourg Police are investigating the theft of a pickup truck from the mall lot on Wednesday, June 25 between 1:00 – 9:00 p.m.
An employee at the mall had parked her 1990 GMC Sierra pickup truck, black with a silver bottom at the start of her shift. The vehicle is in good shape and has Ontario licence MK3719 attached.
There is also a memory of Dale Earnhardt sticker in the back window and tail gate, a Canada flag on the front antenna. The truck has a short box with step sides and a fiberglass tonneau cover over the box.
Interestingly, the vehicle was also equipped with a Club’ anti-theft device attached on the steering wheel.
Cobourg Police are once again taking a no tolerance approach to alcohol at the Cobourg Beach and park areas.
On Wednesday, June 25, in the afternoon and early evening, police laid charges against two people on the beach with alcohol and later against 3 under-aged males, again at the beach who had been fighting prior to police arriving.
The entire waterfront area, beaches and parks, are designated places where alcohol, open or closed, is prohibited. Licensed beer tents are the only exception.
On Tuesday, June 24 at 8:30 p.m., an employee at Zeller’s discovered a worn pair of Rustler blue jeans in one of the store’s male changing rooms. It is believed that someone stole a new pair and left the old pants in the room.
Police received an unexpected boost to the investigation when it was discovered that the crook had left his Samsung cell phone and a Wal-Mart store credit and receipt in the pocket of his discarded pants.
On Tuesday, June 24 at approximately 2:50 p.m., police attended at the ‘Blue Eyes Internet Café’ on Swayne Street.
There were four men inside and police detected the obvious smell of a narcotic emanating from one man. He was placed under investigative detection which allows police to pat down a suspect in search of any weapons.
The 19 year Oshawa man took offence to the pat down and pushed one of the officers, striking the officer in the shoulder. He was immediately arrested for Assaulting Police and Assault with the Intent to Resist Arrest.
Further investigation into this man resulted in three counts of Wilful Non Compliance and five counts of Breach of Probation. These charges results from charges against him that are presently before the courts and on-going probation orders from previous convictions. He was transported back to the police cells.
He was released later from custody and will appear in Cobourg court on Monday, July 21 at 9:30 a.m., to answer to his charges. Police spoke with a second man and he was also patted down for an investigative detention and subsequent investigation. This search resulted in the seizure of 22 grams of suspected cocaine and 2 grams of suspected marijuana. The seized drugs have a street value of approximately $2,500.00. This second man, an 18 year old Scarborough resident is facing charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession of a Controlled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking.
This accused will appear in Cobourg Court, for a Show Cause Hearing, on Thursday, June 26 at 1:30 p.m.
Cobourg Police received three calls concerning thefts from residential apartments on King Street East. All the incidents occurred Monday, June 23.
The first involved someone entering an unlocked apartment and stealing a woman’s purse. The victim did find her purse later in a nearby stairwell and a camera was missing.
The second incident involved the theft of a pair of Reebok running shoes from outside an apartment door. The shoes are size 10, white and blue in colour and worth $50.00.
The third report involved someone breaking into a ground-level apartment through the kitchen window. A small quantity of cash was stolen from the kitchen counter. The thief left the apartment the same way.
Cobourg Police investigated a consensual fight between two Cobourg men just after midnight on Saturday, June 21.
The fight had occurred in front of the glass doors leading to Oddballs Billiards and Bar on King Street East. One of the combatants has been charged with Mischief Under $5,000.00.
Both men received minor cuts to their arms and legs.
drunk driver rolls car three times and still manages to drive home
On Friday, June 20 around 11:00 p.m., Cobourg Police received a report of a car traveling eastbound on County Road 2, east of Port Hope. A witness advised police that the driver had lost control of the car which then rolled three times in the ditch, landed on it’s wheels and is continuing eastbound towards Cobourg.
Police were given the licence plate number and immediately attended at the Cobourg address of the registered owner. There they found a 2007 Dodge Calibre with extensive damage to roof, sides and windshield.
The 20 year old male driver was present and was immediately arrested for Impaired Driving. He was checked over by paramedics for a cut on the right knuckle of his hand.
It took a thief only a few seconds to steal $420.00 from the till at the pro shop at Cobourg Creek Golf Club.
On Saturday, June 21 at 6:15 p.m., the staff person left the shop briefly to move some golf carts. When she returned to the shop she notice the till open and the money gone. No one was observed in the shop or immediate vicinity.
On Friday night, June 20 around 7:45 p.m., Cobourg Police found four men drinking beer on a picnic table near the band shell in Victoria Park.
While police searched for additional alcohol in a bag, they found a quantity of marijuana, electronic weigh scales and folding scissors. The marijuana weighed over 24 grams and was packaged for sale.
In addition to the liquor charges, one man has also been charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking.
All the men are from Cobourg and range from 18 – 26 years old.
As the result of an incident which occurred on Friday, June 20, a 71 year old Cobourg woman has been charged with Theft Under $5,000.00 and banned from entering the No Frills store.
The accused was observed by store staff placing grocery items in an environmentally-friendly shopping bag inside her cart. She also had a number of loose items in the cart and when she went through the checkout, she paid for the loose items and then placed them in the bag, on top of the stolen items.
She was arrested after leaving the store by staff and turned over to police. The investigation revealed she had concealed 19 items valued at $62.74 which were not paid for.
In addition to a future court date on the criminal charge, she was served a trespass notice by the store which is in effect for one year.
A 17 year old Grafton teen and student at the East Collegiate, is facing charges of Dangerous Driving and Mischief.
On Friday, June 20 around the lunch hour, he drove his vehicle around the school’s track and across the grass causing damage. He also drove recklessly around the parking lot causing staff and students to move out of his way.
When approached by a teacher, who stepped in front of vehicle to stop it, the accused bumped the teacher with the bumper of the car and continued on. The teacher was not injured.
The third annual World Elder Abuse Conference was held during the week of June 16 in Ottawa. Two previous conferences were held at the United Nations offices in New York and the second in Geneva. Sunday, June 15 was World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
Constable Terry Stanley, Community Services Officer with the Cobourg Police Service attended the first two days in Ottawa which were designated for law enforcement and service providers of older adults.
The conference offered new and unique ways and initiatives used by different jurisdictions around the world involving the safety of seniors.
Presenters included the Right Honorable Beverly McLachlin, Chief Justice of Canada, Elizabeth Podnieks, Vice President of the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse, Christopher Mikton, an executive with the World Health Organization in Geneva and Sergei Zelenev, Chief of Policy and Development for the United Nations.
Other presenters were from Nigeria, Israel, United States, Spain, Singapore, China, Argentina and the United Kingdom. Several Ministers of the governments of Ontario and Canada were also present.
The conference was sponsored by the Ontario and Canadian Governments.
On Thursday afternoon, June 19, between approximately 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., a man attempted to defraud three businesses out of product he had just shopped for and was attempting to return.

On Thursday, June 19 at 8:00 a.m., Cobourg Police received the report of a 1994 Chevrolet pick-up truck having been stolen from a D’Arcy Street residence overnight.
Approximately one hour later, police located the truck on Alexandria Drive and after reviewing a security video arrested a 44 year old Cobourg woman. The woman was known to police and was arrested a short distance away.
When searched, police found the keys for the truck and also a small amount of crack cocaine on her person.
The accused is been held in custody until her next court appearance June 26. She faces charges of Theft Under $5,000.00, 2 counts of Possession of Stolen Property (truck and keys), Possession of a Controlled Substance and Breach of an Undertaking and Breach of Probation, both from previous dealings with police.
Around 1:30 a.m., Thursday, June 19, Cobourg Police received a call about a man outside an Alexandria Drive residence, yelling and carrying a knife.
Police arrived in the area and found four persons walking southbound in the vicinity. One male had blood coming from his nose.
For safety reasons, police required the foursome to the ground at gun point to which they all complied.
They were immediately searched by police, however no weapon was found.
The investigation revealed that a consensual fight had occurred earlier and that no weapon was ever seen or that there was even a threat of a weapon appearing.
No one required any medical attention and no charges will be laid.
On Thursday, June 18 around 6:30 p.m., Cobourg Police were sent to the area of the TD Bank on the reports of a female in the bank machine area yelling, throwing money around and scaring people.
The accused, a 45 year old woman from Etobicoke, was located on King Street. Police could smell alcohol on her breath, she was unsteady and her eyes were bloodshot.
She was arrested and charged with Being Intoxicated in a Public Place. She was held in police cells until sober. Upon her release she was given a ticket for the offence which carries a $65.00 fine.
Cobourg Police investigated a collision involving a car and a bicycle on Wednesday, June 18. It occurred at the intersection of Elgin and William Streets, at the Best Western Inn.
The car had been northbound on William Street intending on turning right to go east on Elgin Street. The cyclist was on the sidewalk, riding westbound on Elgin Street and came into collision with the car which was in the process of turning.
The 23 year old Cobourg woman on the bicycle did not require medical attention and no charges have been laid by police.
Cobourg Police investigated a single vehicle collision on Tuesday, June 17 at 12:45 p.m. A car traveling northbound on Workman Road suddenly traveled into the east ditch striking a hydro cable and traveling approximately 83 meters before stopping.
The driver, an 18 year old Colborne girl, was taken to Northumberland Hills Health Centre by ambulance. Her injuries are unknown.
Her car was subsequently towed from the scene and she has been charged with Careless Driving.
No reason has been given for why the car left the roadway.
On Wednesday, June 11 at 9:10 a.m., Cobourg Police were called the Easy Home furniture and appliance store at 500 Division Street. They were reporting the theft of their cube van overnight.
A 2005 Ford Cube Van, easily identified with Easy Home logos, had been parked at the rear of the building. The vehicle had been stolen and there was no evidence of broken glass or forced entry.
Fortunately the rear cube compartment was empty.
Later in the day, Durham Regional Police located the van abandon in the Town of Whitby. It was examined by police for fingerprints and other evidence with negative results.
The van was towed to a towing company and will be returned to Cobourg shortly.
On Sunday, June 8 at around 3:00 p.m., Cobourg Police received information that a young man was canvassing for the cancer society and it was suspicious.
The suspect was located by police in the Ontario and White Street area. During questioning by police, the man admitted that he was scamming people by telling them that he was collecting money for cancer.
One householder had become suspicious when the accused was unable to produce identification when asked to do so and police were called.
The 24 year old Peterborough man was arrested and found to have $71.00 on his person. He told police that he had collected $30.00 the previous day.
The accused is being held in Cobourg police custody pending a Show Cause hearing on Monday, June 9 at 1:30 p.m., in Cobourg court. He is facing charges of Fraud and Breach of Probation. He was also wanted by Peterborough police on outstanding charges of Breach of Probation and Failing to Attend Court.
Early Sunday morning, June 8 around 12:30 a.m., Cobourg Police located three minor-age Cobourg teens and a 22 year old Warkworth man on the pier in the area of the Coast Guard office and boat.
The area is marked and gated ‘No Trespassing’. All four were charged with trespassing and one of the teens was also charged with Minor Consuming of Alcohol.
Just after midnight on Saturday, June 7, Cobourg Police located a man on King Street near the police office who was intoxicated and badly bleeding.
The investigation revealed the man had broken a window at the King Street West store then made his way westbound along King Street. Police took him to the hospital for treatment and then he was returned to the police cells to sober up.
Once inside the police cell, the man became upset and started banging on the cell door re-opening his wounds. He then slipped in his blood on the floor and cut his head open. He was taken back to the hospital and subsequently turned over to a family member.
Charges are pending against the 24 year old Cobourg man.
A Cobourg teen had to be taken to the ground after resisted arrest early Saturday morning at St. Mary’s High School track during the annual Relay for Life fundraiser.
The accused was originally located by police on the grounds after yelling and swearing and turned over to his parents for transportation home. However he chose to get out of the car and continued his drunken rage.
When police attempted to arrest him, a struggle ensued and the accused had to be taken to the ground and handcuffed.
He was kept in police custody until sober. Charges of Causing a Disturbance and Resisting Arrest have been laid.
Cobourg Police are investigating more incidents over the past weekend, of unlocked vehicles being entered and property stolen.
A vehicle parked on Ruttan Trail was entered and a wallet stolen. The owner’s credit card had already been used in Toronto before it could be cancelled.
A Tillison Avenue resident has reported to police that their vehicle, which was parked in the driveway was entered and items stolen. The thief took the face plate off a Panasonic stereo worth $250.00 and a $30.00 iPod docking station.
Another vehicle parked in a driveway on Maplewood Boulevard was also entered and two sets of keys were taken.
Sometime after midnight on Friday, June 6, a King Street East apartment dweller told police he woke up to a light being turned on and an unidentifiable person leaving the apartment.
He had not locked his apartment door prior to going to bed and did not realize, until a few hours later, that his Toshiba Laptop computer was also stolen.
The complainant did not give police a reason why he did not call them at the time of the occurrence.
Cobourg Police report an increase in reports of gasoline being stolen from local gas bars. With rising gas prices, thieves are filling their vehicles and driving off with paying for the fuel.
The latest incident occurred on Friday morning, June 6 at approximately 10:30 a.m., at the Petro Canada station on Division Street.
A male suspect filled his vehicle with $132.00 worth of gas and immediately drove off. A video security camera revealed the male was wearing a black T-shirt and blue jeans. Unfortunately, the video was too blurry to pick up the licence plate.
Anyone caught stealing gas will be charged with theft by police.
Sometime overnight on Thursday, June 5 or Friday morning, June 6, someone ‘spun’ the front door cylinder lock at Herbal Magic. The business is located at 500 Division Street.
Once inside, the offender(s) ransacked the business and stole two computers and a quantity of weight management supplements.
It appears they left the premises via the rear door. The incident is very similar to a break in they experienced in February.
Cobourg Police are investigating an incident which occurred on Wednesday, June 4 at Terry Fox Public School.
Around 1:45 p.m., a woman approached the school yard in a car on Rayner Road. She beckoned with her hand to three male students in the school yard, waving them towards her.
The students told police and school authorities that she said something to them as well, however they were not sure what she said. The students did not approach the car and started back towards the school to report the incident.
The principal was in the yard at the time and when he approached the car, it drove off.
The woman is described as having red hair. She was driving a small blue car.
Sometime overnight on Monday, June 2, a van parked behind the Dutch Oven Bakery and Coffee Shop on King Street, was broken into and ransacked.
The culprit(s) smashed the driver’s side window to gain entry. Once inside, boxes were rummaged through and some items stolen. It is only known at this time that a quantity of bags of chips is missing.
Cobourg Police are investigating the theft of a 1989 GMC Sierra pickup truck during the daytime on Tuesday, June 3. The truck was parked in the lot at Weetabix on D’Arcy Street in the morning and when the owner came out to go home at 7:00 p.m., the vehicle was missing.
The truck is blue in colour with Ontario licence 5624RS. The vehicle has rust on the hood and scratches on the passenger side.
On Monday, June 2 at approximately 7:10 p.m., a car traveling southbound on Ontario Street was turning left onto University Avenue when it struck a bicycle.
The bike was northbound on Ontario Street in the intersection. Both vehicles were moving on a green light, however the driver of the car failed to yield to the bicycle.
A 70 year old Hamilton Township woman has been charged with Failing To Yield.
The 43 year old Cobourg man on the bicycle was treated for a sore arm at the scene by ambulance personnel.
Both vehicles were removed from the scene by the owners.
Cobourg Police are investigating the break, enter and theft at an Alexandria Drive home sometime overnight Sunday, June 1.
The investigation reveals that someone entered the residence through a rear basement window, which may not have been locked.
The residents report the following items stolen. An X-box 360 game, a guitar from the Guitar Hero game, a microphone, 10 X-box games, 2 Sony Play Station games, 1 Nintendo DS video player and 2 games and a woman’s black nylon wallet containing personal items.
On Saturday night, May 31 at around 11:00 p.m., a Cobourg man and woman were together in a King Street East apartment when an argument turned violent.
The police investigation revealed that the couple was in fact boyfriend/girlfriend however the male became angry with his girlfriend and while she was sitting on the love seat, he grabbed her by the throat and punched her several times in the face. He also verbally threatened to kill her.
The female fled the apartment and attended at the Cobourg police office to report the incident.
A 46 year old Cobourg man has been arrested by police and charged with Assault, Utter Death Threat and Breach of Recognizance. He has been held in custody for a Show Cause Hearing in Cobourg court on Monday, June 2 at 1:30 p.m.
The victim suffered a two inch cut above her eye with blackening under the eye and scratches to her neck. She did not require any stitches.
On Saturday, May 31 at Carlisle Street resident reported to police that someone stole their trampoline overnight from the lawn beside their home.
Police investigated and subsequently located the trampoline behind the Fleming Building. It was severely damaged and returned to the owner for disposal.
A Coronation Crescent resident reported to Cobourg Police that his car had been stolen from his driveway overnight Friday, May 31. His 2007 Toyota had been left locked. Later in the day, Durham Regional Police located the car in their area and arrested three occupants. Two males and one female were taken into police custody. They were all from Cobourg.
A 17 year old Hamilton Township male has been charged with Failing To Stop for a Red Light after hitting a car in the intersection of Division and Albert Street.
There were no injuries in the crash which occurred on Friday, May 30 at 11:50 p.m. The teen has been charged with failing to stop for a red light after his southbound vehicle struck an eastbound vehicle on Albert Street. The eastbound car, driven by a Cobourg woman, required a tow from the scene.
