On Sunday, February 3 at 1:18 a.m., a George Street apartment resident advised Cobourg Police that his apartment had been broken into. Someone had placed a ladder against the front wall, which faces George Street, and entered through a second-floor window.
The window had been smashed and foot prints were visible on the roof deck.
According to the complainant, approximately $500.00 worth of items is missing.
Cobourg Police investigated a car crash on Friday morning, February 1 at 5:45 a.m. A 68 year old Port Hope man was eastbound on Elgin Street when his car mounted the centre-lane median strip and knocked the traffic lights down. His car continued on through the intersection coming to rest on the southeast corner boulevard.
The driver was taken to Northumberland Hills Health Centre by ambulance. There is no report on the extent of his injuries.
His car was towed from the scene and he has been charged with Careless Driving.
A 17 year old Cobourg teenage girl is in custody following a series of assaults and probation violations which occurred on Tuesday evening, January 29.
The accused had been ordered, earlier in the day by the courts, to reside with a named surety to complete a previously imposed conditional sentence. That evening she failed to show at her designated home and was subsequently located by her community worker in downtown Cobourg. She had been drinking.
Once dropped off at her surety’s house by the worker, she assaulted the worker by punching her in the head and kicking her in the head, back and kidney area.
Police arrived at the scene and in the process of arresting the teen, two officers were assaulted. She head-butted one officer and kicked another officer in the leg.
She was taken to Northumberland Hills Health Centre by ambulance and police. Once at the hospital she needed to be physically restrained but not before she punched and spat at two nurses. Due to previous court orders, the accused is facing five counts of Willful Compliance as well as six counts of assault from tonight’s incidents.
She will appear in Cobourg Youth court on Tuesday, February 12 at 9:30 a.m., to face the 11 charges.
Cobourg Police are investigating an act of mischief which occurred Sunday afternoon, January 27 at the Northumberland County Works Yard on Veronica Street.
Someone scaled the fence and entered an unlocked bus and removed a fire extinguisher. They took the fire extinguisher and discharged it on a parked loader in the yard.
Footprints in the snow indicate that kids were involved. There is not report of damage to the bus or loader.
On Sunday, January 27 at 5:40 p.m., Cobourg Police attended at an Abbott Boulevard residence after receiving a complaint from a woman who reported that her husband assaulted her.
The investigation revealed that the woman had been in a vehicle with her husband when they began arguing. The victim alleges that her husband threw coffee on her then he stopped the vehicle and pushed her out. Minutes later he grabbed her arm, while he still behind the wheel of the vehicle, drove short a distance forcing her to run alongside until she fell on the roadway.
The husband was arrested a short time later and has been held in custody for a Show Cause Hearing in Cobourg court on Monday, January 28 at 1:30 p.m. He is facing charges of Assault and Criminal Negligence.
On Sunday, January 27 at approximately midnight, Cobourg Police attended at an apartment building on Westwood Drive in response to a call concerning a domestic dispute.
Upon the arrival of police, the investigation revealed numerous persons in an apartment, all intoxicated. When police arrested a 46 year old female to prevent a breach of the peace, she spit into the face of one of officers.
The female, from Oshawa, was held in police custody until she sobered up and will appear in Cobourg Court on Monday, February 25 at 9:30 a.m.
A ninety year old Cobourg man has been charged with making an Unsafe Turn while attempting to turn onto King Street from Third Street and striking an eastbound pickup truck on King Street.
The collision occurred on Friday, January 25 at 11:30 a.m. Both vehicles were able to be driven from the scene and there were no injuries.
Cobourg Police have received five complaints over the past weekend of unlocked vehicles being entered and in some cases, items stolen. The vehicles were on parked on Huycke Street, Cornell Crescent, Ontario Street and King Street West.
Three of the vehicles were entered and rummaged through. Papers and personal items were thrown about, but nothing has been reported as stolen by the owners.
Two other vehicles which were entered had items stolen, including a stereo system, Eliminator booster pack, CD player and CDs.
Police continue to remind the public of the importance of locking their vehicles regardless of where they parked.
On October 9, 2007, Cobourg Police reported that an intruder has made his way into the Legion Village complex in Cobourg. Several thefts were committed by the intruder before he finally left the building after approximately 40 minutes.
Security video and a detailed description of the suspect was subsequently circulated by Cobourg Police to all other police services in Ontario, in an attempt to identify the man.
On January 16, 2008, a meeting was held at the Waterloo Regional Police headquarters after 13 other police jurisdictions in southern Ontario, had video and incidents similar to the ones in Cobourg.
As a result of this meeting of police personnel, a suspect was positively identified and on Monday, January 21, 2008, he was arrested in Toronto. His name is Russell White, age 45 from Niagara Falls.
He is currently in custody while all the police agencies involved prepare their individual charges. There are currently over 100 charges being laid against this accused including several from the Cobourg Police Service.
The accused already has 58 convictions for breaking, entering and stealing from senior retirement residences, over the past years.
Acting on a tip from a witness in the parking lot of Bingo Country, Cobourg Police attended and arrested a man selling unmarked cigarettes from his van.
On Monday night, January 21 at approximately 6:50 p.m., police arrested a 43 year old Roseneath man who was parked at the bingo hall attempting to sell the cigarettes to passersby.
The investigation resulted in police seizing approximately 33,000 cigarettes which were wrapped in loose bundles and clear plastic Ziploc baggies.
The accused was charged with Possession of Unmarked Cigarettes, contrary to the Tobacco Tax Act. He will appear in Cobourg Court on Wednesday, March 5 at 9:00 a.m.
Cobourg Police and the Ministry of Revenue are continuing the investigation.
Early Sunday morning, January 20 at 4:00 a.m., Cobourg Police responded to an alarm call at the Lion’s Community Centre on Elgin Street East.
Someone had smashed a front window which leads into the administration office. The building was subsequently checked by police and no one was found inside. The interior of the building appeared to be in order and it is unknown if anyone actually entered the facility or not.
On Friday, January 18 at 3:05 p.m., a car pulled from a private lot on William Street near Kraft Foods and struck a southbound car.
The 17 year old male driver from Campbellcroft was charged with Failing To Yield To Through Traffic. His car needed to be towed from the scene. The driver of the second car was able to drive her car from the scene.
