Cobourg Police were called to the Cobourg Arena on Wednesday night, September 1 at 8:00 p.m., in regard to a reported assault.
The investigation revealed that the father of a young hockey player had assaulted his sons coach after his son had been cut from the team.
The Cobourg Minor Hockey team coach had three goalies trying for two positions and he was telling the mother of the player to be cut what was happening. The player’s father was apparently nearby and overheard the conversation.
The father, now the accused, picked up a hockey helmet and hit the coach on the side of the head with the helmet.
The accuseds wife and other parents managed to get the accused out of the room and eventually out of the arena. During his exit, the accused was swinging a hockey stick and yelling at the coach and threats were made.
Police arrested Richard Dean Brown, age 43, of Daintry Crescent in Cobourg and he has been charged with assault with a weapon and uttering threats.
Brown has been held for a bail hearing.
The coach had a small bump come up on the side of his head but did not require medical attention.
Cobourg police investigated a three-vehicle; rear-end collision on Division Street just north of University Avenue.
The crash occurred at 1:00 p.m., on Tuesday, August 31.
All three vehicles were northbound on William Street following each other, when the first two vehicles slowed as traffic ahead was stopping. The trailing vehicle did not stop and crashed into the rear of the middle vehicle sending it into the rear of the lead vehicle.
There were no injuries but the first two vehicles required tows from the scene.
The last vehicle, driven by a 28 year old Newtonville man, was driven from the scene. He was also charged with careless driving.
On Saturday evening, August 28 at around 9:40 p.m., two Cobourg men were observed setting fire to a car in the driveway of an Anne Street residence.
They had leaned in an open window on the driver’s side door and set fire to the rear seat. The fire burned into the door compartment, around the gas filler cap and eventually igniting a tire.
Cobourg Fire and Police Services responded and the fire was put out.
The two suspects were arrested later that night in Victoria Park as a result of an unrelated disturbance complaint.
Both men are from Cobourg. One is aged 24 years and the other is 26 years old.
They were both subsequently released on Promises to Appear in Cobourg court on September 22, 2010.
With the approach of a new school year, Cobourg Police will be enforcing speed limits everywhere, especially in the area of local schools.
Drivers have not had to deal with a large number the young students crossing roadways to get to their school for the past number of weeks. All of that will of course change on Tuesday morning, September 7.
Young students are often excited about the beginning of a new school year and as drivers; everyone needs to be mine full of this. Kids and pedestrians need to foremost on the minds of drivers.
Police will start with speed monitoring and enforcement before school begins.
Cobourg police investigated two rear-end collisions on Friday, August 27.
The first collision involved a motorcycle and car at 9:40 a.m., at the intersection of Division Street and Densmore Road.
Both vehicles were northbound. The car was stopped because of a red light and the motorcycle approaching from the rear ran into the back of the car.
No one was hurt and both vehicles were driven from the scene. The driver of the motorcycle, a 70 year old Cobourg man, has been charged with following too close.
The second crash occurred at 3:27 p.m., on University Avenue just west of Division Street.
In this case, a vehicle was parked on University Avenue facing east when it was struck in the rear by another eastbound vehicle.
Both vehicles had minor damage; however the driver of the trailing vehicle, a 17 year old Hamilton Township male teen, was also charged with following too closely.
